Questions about Yokota (for a friend)
So one of my friends and her husband is PCSing to Yokota. She is a VERY new Mil wife and is slightly freaking out. Her H doesn't really know much either.
I sent her a bunch of links like the Yokota newcomers info page, MilOneSource, etc., but I didn't find anything about the documentation she needs to go over. I know a passport, but a visa? A no fee passport? How does she go about getting all of this?
Also any information about anything would be awesome. He's E5, no kids, one cat and one dog. Neither of their cars fit within the shipping limits so they're going to sell both of those.
TIA!

Re: Questions about Yokota (for a friend)
That or some type of Personnel Support Detachment where she can ask about command sponsorship and stuff.
She will need a regular passport (post office), a no fee passport (she can get through the base, at least I did). I did not get a visa, because I got a SOFA stamp (acts like a visa) in my passports. She will get the SOFA stamp over there, there will be a class she has to take and they will tell her where to go to get that stamp. No fee is for when traveling on orders, regular passport is for personal travel. Her H will have to get a family entry approval papers, and she will have to be cleared medically. She should be able to go to the base hospital to get the paper work. That will also cover a dental check-up.
Do they know that they can store one of their cars in government storage? No cost. We did that wih our truck, they started it every month, fixed it if needed for no cost (they had to put a new battery in.) It was also stored inside, so it was protected. We made sure they were going to take care of it. Honestly, I'm glad that when we came home from Japan, we had a vehicle ready for us.
Pets, they need to start the quarantine stuff now! Tell her to go to the base vet, and that she is moving to Japan. They will know what to do, and guide her through what they need to do. They have to have rabies (2 shots 30 days a part, no matter if they are already up to date), a micor chip (they recently changed the how many digits the chips have, so she may have to get new chips), a blood test to prove they have enough of the rabies vaccine in them, and then right before they move need to get healt cert from the vet, it is only good for 10 days. Going over is more work than coming home. They will also need kennels that are air transportation safe. Hardsided, vents on all 4 sides, the animals should be able to stand up, turn around, sit, and lay down in them. They also need to start saving up to pay to get their furbabies over there. That cost is on them, expensive, but completely worth it. There is a quarantine period of 6 months. They can do it at home, so if they start now, they won't have to keep them in quarantine as long. There are couple of ways of doing this. A) Doing it all over here if they have the time.
Doing part of it over here, and the other rest of it over there. The animals can finish the quarantine at the base kennel ( very reasonable prices) and if they get base housing right away they can finish it at the house on base. C) The animals are kept at the Japanese airport quarantine area and that will be very expensive.
This link is for Yokota, and it has a little section on bringing pets to Japan.http://www.yokota.af.mil/library/newcomers/index.asp
