Ack! Half a skein short! ISO (in post 6)!

I picked up an old project and started to finish it off for a friend's baby shower.  I'm going to be short by only a few yards.  Any suggestions what to do since the yarn isn't made any more and so far I haven't had any luck tracking down someone who has any?  My DH said I should just make the last corner (it's knitted on the diagonal" a different color.  Um, no.

  • A couple of options come to mind:

    1. See if anyone has it on ravelry. Some people have stashes listed, and are willing to sell/trade

    2. Find a way to rip back enough that you can make it smaller without starting all over. Might be tough if it's on the diagonal

  • Is it a baby blanket knit in the diagonal?  If so, could you add a different color on the corner and make a "hood" for it?

Or knit back a few rows and switch to a smaller needle for the last bit?  It won't be super noticeable, and might make give you a enough extra yarn.

  • Hmm, I'll have to see if I have circular needles that are just a little smaller.  It is chunky enough that might just be the best solution at this point.  I don't want to shrink down too much, but it might work.

I thought about the hood option, but I'm just not sure it will work with as heavy as this blanket is.  It's definitely a warmth & comfort type blanket with the way it is turning out.

I already did searches on Ravelry, local CL, Ebay, Freecycle, Facebook, etc. with no luck so far.  I'm still working on finding more, but I think the smaller needle solution might be my best bet at this point.

  • Well, what yarn are you looking for?  One of us here might have it :)

I wasn't sure if that would violate codes of conduct.

I need both Sage Green and White of Caron Simply Soft QUICK (extra bulky)

    Not at all.

But I don't have any of that yarn

The green is going to be really really hard to match.  Thankfully, I just got an email on ravelry that I can get some.  I have some homespun white that I'm hoping will pass as a substitute.  I just wish I'd realized earlier that I'd have this problem.  I think I could've done a couple of things differently and avoided this.  Oh well.

  • Yay, assuming there is follow through, Ravelry found me some green.  No one wants to sell their white of this brand, but I think I have something that will work. Thank goodness!

  • That's great!  Good luck finishing your project.
