We are kind of sort of starting our house hunt. We weren't going to start really hard core looking until later this summer so we could make a down payment without cleaning out the savings account. (We have the amount we wanted saved, just not any extra at this point.)
We have been looking online, because the area we will be buying a house in is about 35 miles away. We found a new listing about a week ago on one realtor's site, and it looked pretty awesome online. So it had an open house today and DH ended up it having to work. So we drove over and went through it.
It has EVERYTHING we want. 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, HUGE deck and yard (1.2 acre) finished basement, 2.5 car garage, a fire pit, a shed, a hot tub. The kitchen is brand new and is basically my dream kitchen. (There is seriously not a single thing I didn't like about the kitchen.) It's even a little lower than our "limit". The basement and main level are PERFECT. Everything on them is amazing.
But it's an old house. (1890's). I love old houses, but the upstairs level kinda sucks. The bedrooms are long and narrow, and they have really low angled ceilings. There is no way to change the ceilings without completely redoing the roof of the house....which we can't afford (probably 20k). The more we talked/thought about it, the bedrooms upstairs are a deal breaker. The 2 bedrooms on the main floor are too small for a master. (More of a kids room/playroom/office size.)
I've been in love with it for a week waiting for today to come around so we could go see it. And the Realtor was pretty awesome for being a realtor. Not pushy, very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable. I'm just disappointed because we are just about ready to buy, and I thought we might get lucky and have something fall into our laps.
Re: Disappointed
So sorry...house hunting is one of those things that just takes time. Word of advice: Do not go to look at properties without your own realtor. It is really frowned upon and your realtor won't end up getting that part of the comission. It is really important to have a realtor (who knows all the business) representing you. Realtors are also more likely to know about various areas.
We just closed on a home 2 weeks ago. It wasn't a major hunt for the place, but we did have to outbid 5 other buyers. Hope you find what you're looking for soon! Just remember, the right house really is worth the wait!
Bummer about the house. But I agree you shouldn't go for it if the bedrooms are a big issue. Our friends told us when we were looking, "Don't settle on a house." I think it was really good advice.
We ran into that too. A house that had everything we wanted (including close to a bike trail.) It was an older house too and while it had been redone, the floor plan and the small, low ceiling bedrooms were a deal breaker for us. Then, we thought we wanted another house and it had siding issues and roof issues. It all worked out in the end! We love the house we ended up with and have the best neighbors ever!! I know DH had to "grieve" the house that had the siding issues. He had gotten so into it and then was upset but is now glad we ended up where we did. Good luck in house hunting. It is stressful but fun!!!
