xp branding & resumes/cv's- your opinion?

someone mentioned this to me and I'm curious, those of you who work in HR or who do hiring regularly, is 'branding' something you look for or you feel makes ppl stand out? when does it cross the line and become obnoxious? what are some memorable things (in a good way) you've seen on resumes?

I moved recently & am looking for a job & wondering if I should be going this route...

thanks!

  • I'm curious as to what you mean by branding, specifically

I *think* it is approaching your resume/CV in a way that highlights your strengths and presents things usually in a different format/manner than simply listing education, jobs, skills, certifications/licenses/memberships etc. This can include color, graphics, presentation, as well as going a little outside the box- some ppl will apparently include quotes from references, graphics, etc. It is an approach to try to present your identity beyond the standard???  Again,  this is just my impression. I'm a bit uncomfortable doing it in many ways but I also suspect it depends on the field- in creative fields, I would think it would be better received than in more conservative type fields.

PS i love your disclaimer at the bottom of siggie & also a super belated congrats on LO- we were on the IF boards around the same time I believe.

  • OK, gotcha. Yes, I've seen it in more creative fields. I would avoid colored resume paper (and most resumes are e-mailed these days anyway), and be very, very careful with colored text, if you use it at all. I have seen anything from including your linkedin link as part of your contact info, and quotes from references or people who gave you e-references on linkedin. I think if done well it can work out nicely. But I'd run it by someone who sees them often and can give you tips. And I'd look at a LOT of examples of successful ones.

I'm in a scientific field, so it would not fly.

Thanks on the congrats. We're having a good time with DD :)

Yeah, no I wouldn't do colored ink or paper (well, paper at all LOL!)... I am also in a semi-science oriented field (healthcare related) but some of the positions might be a little outside the norm. B/c we did a corporate relo I have a person working with me on spouse benefits and that person was the one who suggested branding so I guess I will see what she comes up with & how I feel...in the meantime I think I'll stick with my boring old one ;) hehe.
