Job relevance and resume question

My H was in the military for 5 years. He got out a little over a year ago and has been working retail since he was unable to find a job in his field. A friend says a job may be opening up in the area soon, so he is redoing his resume.

His retail position has zero relevance to the job he wants, but he rose through the ranks at the store very quickly and is now an assistant store manager. How should he list the retail position in the resume?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Re: Job relevance and resume question

  • It's possible he can leave it off his resume and explain the gap in his CL. However, if there are any skills he used or picked up in the retail job, he can highlight them on his resume.

  • I would say he should put it on to illustrate his dedication to his job. He took a job that clearly is not related to his prior experience and was well liked enough to be promoted in a short time. IMO that speaks very well to his character, which can affect hiring, especially in a difficult economy.

  • Depending what job he is applying for and if any kind of management skills is needed, I would include that. There is no shame in being in a job outside of his regular field, people have to provide for their family, anything, if I would have come across his resume, I would think he is a stand up guy, humble and a man of character who supported his family by taking job that he was over qualified for. He needs to highlight the fact that he got so many promotions within a short period of time and his management skills as an assistant manager, those issues are the same (hiring/firing, scheduling, leading the team, etc.) regardless of the field.

  • Thanks! He listed his job duties briefly and focused on the skills applicable to the job. *fingers crossed*
