another DC question (restaurants)

Sorry ladies....I feel like I'm bombarding the board today, but I'm home sick!  As I said in PP DH and I are going to DC this weekend...I've been looking through the restaurant suggestions people have given in other posts and I feel like they're all dressier places.  We're looking for somewhere we can feel comfortable going to in khaki shorts/nice t-shirts (nothing sloppy, but normal "touristy" apparel).  We're looking for dinner recommendations (ok if we need to make reservations I can do that this afternoon) in the downtown area (white house, chinatown, mall/smithsonians, etc).  We don't mind spending some money for good food, but not looking to break the bank.  Bonus points if one of them has Irish food because DH is obsessed with Ireland and Sunday is his birthday.  TIA!

Re: another DC question (restaurants)

  • There are TONS of great restaruants in DC in all of those neighborhoods, so you may want to narrow your criteria down a bit - what kind of food do you like? Vibe preference? There is a place in Chinatown called Fado's that's more of a traditional Irish pub. It can get pretty crowded/loud in the evening, especially if there's a game, so you may want to go on the earlier side. If you're looking to stick to traditional American food, Capital City Brewing Company is always a good choice. But like I said, without more info there are just too many great restaurants to list!

  • Fado's off Chinatown metro stop.  It's an Irish pub, but we've been there for dinner too and I was actually impressed.  And we had just come from a baseball game so we were dressed very casual.  DH has been to Ireland and says that the atmosphere felt pretty authentic and he really liked their fish and chips.  The rest of the group and I enjoyed our food too.

Sorry!!  Umm....well DH will eat anything (and I mean ANYTHING)....I'm a little more difficult...I don't eat red meat and unfortunately most seafood makes me nauseous during this pregnancy (certain fish are okay, but whatever Irish restaurant we end up at will probably be fish n chips for me).....I'm not a very adventurous eater, but American or European fare works well for me (I'd adore a French restaurant, but I know many of them are formal/pricey).

Bistrot Du Coin, on Connecticut Ave in Dupont, is a casual French place that won't break the bank.

There are loads of Irish restaurants in DC.  Fado's is OK, but it's a chain, so IMO it doesn't have the feel of a real Irish pub. My favorite Irish pubs are all in Virginia -- O'Sullivan's and the Four Courts in Arlington, and O'Connell's in Old Town Alexandria.  The food at O'Connells is fantastic.

  • I've heard the food court/restaurants at Union Station are really good. Might be a good option as it's a pretty touristy spot and you might be there/in the area anyway.

DH ADORES Austin Grill and Rosa Mexicano and he's anti seafood and red meat. Austin Grill is typical chain and Rosa a bit nicer but still fine going casual. Both have a nice brunch menu.

You'll also pass (assuming you take 7th St. to get between Chinatown and the Mall) two Starbucks, a cupcake shop (though I don't think there's any seating there) and a gelato shop (seating). Nearby are a few Cosi with comfy, squishy chairs and an Au Bon Pain.

Also - on the weekends a lot of the traffic in the areas you've described is tourist. You see a LOT of sneakers, jeans and "Property of the FBI" sweatshirts.

  • When you're near the mall/museums, I would go to either the food court in the Ronald Reagan building (http://www.itcdc.com/explore.php?p=13) or the cafeteria at the American Indian Museum.  DC also has some very good foodtrucks; you can check out what food trucks are nearby at this site (most are posted by 11ish each morning): http://foodtruckfiesta.com/

There are a lot of casual restaurants in Penn Quarter/Chinatown - some that I would recommend include Matchbox (pizza/sandwiches), Ella's Pizza, La Tasca (Spanish/tapas), and RFD (American, and a huge beer selection).  They're good for either lunch or dinner, and they are pretty casual.  There are also lots of sandwich/food bar type places in that area, as well as some chain restaurants (Fuddruckers) and, of course, several Chinese restaurants.  Jaleo (Spanish/tapas), Zaytinya (Middle Eastern), and Oyamel (Mexican) are all very good and very popular (try to make reservations if you can), but I would not go there in shorts/t-shirts for dinner; however, you might be able to get away with it at lunch.

If you're near the White House, Old Ebbitt Grill is a DC institution.  You will see lots of people there for business lunches, but there are also lots of tourists, too, so I wouldn't worry about being underdressed.  If you head towards 17th & Pennsylvania, there's a Cosi and a few sandwich and pizza places on G street between 17th & 18th (my favorite is Ellipse Cafe, which is in the courtyard behind the CVS on G St, and Phillips Cafe is pretty popular).

There are a couple decent Irish bars in Arlington; if your husband has his heart set on Irish food one night, I would go to one of those so you are closer to your hotel.  Ri Ra is a chain, but it's pretty good and metro-accessible.  http://www.rira.com/

If you want to go to non-Irish restaurants in Arlington, I would recommend Liberty Tavern (upscale American), Tallulah (upscale American), Ray's the Steaks and Ray's Hellburger (probably self-explanatory), Rabbit Grill (sandwiches/salads), Boulevard Wood Grill (American), Guajillos (Mexican), Mexicali Blues (Mexican), or Faccia Luna (pizza/Italian).  All of these are only a metro stop or two away from Rosslyn (Guajillo's and Ray's Hell Burger are in Rosslyn).
