What is "race day adrenaline" for YOU?

And yes "YOU" is different for every person, every race, and every other different scenario.

Does it give you a high that makes you go an extra mile?  Three miles?  Five miles?!  Do you get nervous?  Excited?  Sick?

I am getting the jitters over a race (ahem, run) on Saturday so I'm looking for some positive feedback from the pros ;)

Re: What is "race day adrenaline" for YOU?

  • Apparently for me it makes me take off at a moderate pace only to look at my Garmin about a mile in and realize that I'm 2 minutes faster than my intended pace.

It also led me to PR my 5K personal best...except that I was running a half marathon.  Oops.   Mile ten hit me really hard that race.

  • For me...I feel like I'm just tootling along comfortably, only to look down at my Garmin and find out I'm running a solid 30-45 seconds faster than my normal pace.

  • You gals are all fancy-pants with your Garmins :(  I just know where the mile markers are and plan on wearing my watch to gauge my pace. I'm jealous!

  • The only time I've ever been slightly nervous for a race was in HS when I knew I was close to qualifying for the state meet in the 500 free.

As for now, I trust my training, and don't really get nervous / adrenaline rush for race day.

  • First thing in the morning, it gives me the shakes... teeth chattering, hands quaking, the works.

Then I get chatty. And obsessive about the details--my outfit, my food, etc.

Then it makes me have to pee a lot.

Throughout the day before, it makes me short of breath and I have to stop and consciously take a deep breath and *relax* every few minutes. This one drives DH nuts, but luckily it only applies to longer races like halves and marathons.

Once I start running, my head clears, and it's like, "What was the big freaking deal, dummy? You know how to do this." And at the end, sometimes I get emotional like on Sunday when I was hurting so bad and just wished it was over.

  • Years later, race day adrenaline still means having to pee a lot before getting into my corral.
  • I also have to pee a lot. I make sure to give myself enough time to use the portopots at least twice.

  • I am glad I am not the only one who pees multiple times prior to races!
  • I talk a lot.  I get so nervous and I'm sure I bug people the day before.

Day of my stomach sometimes gets upset and I have to pee a lot.

In my non-5K races, I get really emotional from the crowd support and if I'm hurting.

  • Lots of peeing, nervous tummy (GI issues), and I'm faster than in training.

Pretty much this exactly.  My tummy will be upset before the race, but once I start, it's usually just fine.

  • Put me in with the I have to pee group. Other than that, racing for me is fun. I don't get too worked up about it.
  • It makes me have to pee, every time.  That's it though really.  I get nervous about having to pee along the route so once I get it out of the way I feel like I'm set to run.

I for some reason get really sick of running right beforehand, but fall in love with it again at some point during the race, lol. I think I'm weird though.

This! I just get anxious about getting their on time, worried about what I ate, use the bathroom a lot...Then once a few miles are down, I start to relax and have fun.

  • I usually have some GI issues early in the morning, and then I pee every 20 minutes or so until race time.

During a race, my thoughts are so clear and vivid, it is weird! I talk myself down, strategize, and coach myself throughout the entire event in a way that I just can't do in training. I also tend to go quite a bit faster with little additional effort.
