Girl "identical" to Madeline McCann seen shortly after disappearance

I can't figure out if this info is just being released or just being reported.

A blonde girl identical to Madeleine McCann was seen at a campsite in Spain just three days after the British toddler went missing five years ago, it has emerged.

The groggy-looking child appeared alienated from the German family she was staying with at the resort on the Costa del Sol, according to a witness.

The potential sighting came three days after Madeleine was abducted from Praia da Luz in Portugal, a few hours drive away.

British detectives investigating her disappearance have been told the German family paid extra after arriving at the campsite with one more child than expected on May 6, 2007, reports The Sun.

It is also believed that their vehicle had fake number plates to avoid detection.

The alarm was raised by holidaymaker Karen Sisson, 49, who was staying at the Cabopino campsite near Fuengirola.

Ms Sisson, from Gibraltar, told police at the time that the girl was wearing a pink T-shirt, shorts and a beige hat and seemed 'out of it'.

She said that the girl seemed out of place with the German couple and their two curly-haired children.

The mother-of-two's suspicions were further raised when she saw the girl wearing the same outfit the following day.

Ms Sisson left the next day but records show the German family stayed at the campsite for two weeks.

They checked in under the name Karsten Mayer, who gave 1970 as his year of birth.

Their car had a 'BE' German number plate, which went out of official use 38 years ago - but the vehicle was a Mercedes Vito people carrier that was first manufactured in 1996.

A spokesman for the McCanns said yesterday: 'This lady has done the right thing in reporting what she saw to the police.'

The development comes as Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry on Sunday declared they will never give up their search for their missing daughter as they took part in a ten-kilometre charity run.

Just three days after the fifth anniversary of Maddie's abduction, the couple took part at the busy Liverpool event for the first time.

Mrs McCann, 44, wore a white vest with a picture of Madeleine on the front and the words 'Never give up' on the back.

It was the first year they felt able to take part in the event.

A travel firm has said the use of an image of Madeleine McCann on an independent website to promote its holidays in Portugal is "vile".

The advert, on VoucherDigg.co.uk, used a photo of Madeleine released by her parents soon after she disappeared.

It was used to illustrate deals offered by lowcostholidays.com.

Clarence Mitchell, a McCann family spokesman, told Sky News that the misuse of the image was "utterly appalling and frankly unforgivable".

A spokesman for lowcostholidays.com said it had no advertising contract with VoucherDigg and had been trying to get the image removed. VoucherDigg has not commented.

We apologise for any distress this may have caused?

    Lawrence Hunt CEO, lowcostholidays.com

Lowcostholidays described VoucherDigg as a company that "picked up deals and offers via an affiliate network" and said it had "previously featured holidays from lowcostholidays.com as well as many other well-known holiday companies".

But consent to feature its holidays had not been given, it added.

    'Lawyers contacted'

Chief operating officer Lawrence Hunt said: "We have no contract with VoucherDigg to advertise our holidays and we are doing all that we can to contact the website and get the picture removed.

"We discovered this vile material yesterday and immediately broke all the [web] links to our site and contacted our lawyers.

"We apologise for any distress this may have caused which is completely beyond our control and are disgusted by the use of this image."

Mr Mitchell said: "It needs to be taken down immediately. Kate and Gerry were horrified when they found out about it. It is offensive in the extreme.

"Whether it's a mistake or hacking it's an utter disgrace."

Madeleine, of Rothley, Leicestershire, was nearly four when she vanished from her family's holiday apartment in the Algarve.

Events have been held recently to mark the five-year anniversary of her disappearance - including a church service at her grandparents' church in Liverpool.

Last week, her parents Kate and Gerry McCann said they had "no doubt" Portuguese authorities would reopen the investigation.

  • I so, so, so, so badly hope they find her alive.

But I will never understand why her parents left the kids alone in a hotel room while they went out to eat.

I feel like Europeans do stuff like this.

  • IIRC, they didn't go "out" to eat.  they were eating in the courtyard, outside the room.  they could see the door from where they were.  someone went in the back window.

But that's not true. I remember the photos and the explanations of where they were in contrast to where their hotel room was. There wasn't a way for them to see the door to their hotel room and no way to see where they were eating from the room. Also, I didn't think there was proof anyone went in the back window. However, the back of the hotel did face an area that anyone could access the resort from.

Issues of taste aside, why would you ever want to remind people of this association? "Come to Portugal, where a child was abducted just yards from her parents!" uh yeah, sign me right up...

Yup. I do not hope she is alive. i hope she passed away quickly and peacefully. I would never live through the nightmares of knowing my child was missing somewhere, hurting, where I couldn't help her.

Actually, Europeans dont do "stuff" like this.  At least none of the ones I have met while living here.

The ones I live around do. And when we go to resorts around here, I often see people with baby monitors at the dinner table.  But yeah, not everyone is the same.
