Between New Haven, CT and Bar Harbor, ME

Any suggestions about where to do an overnight quick trip between New Haven, Connecticut and Bar Harbor, Maine. DH and I are visiting family in CT and then driving to Bar Harbor for a week. I was thinking, rather than doing a 7-hr drive in one day we could stop somewhere in the middle.

Boston is middle-ish, but we've been there a couple times. It looks more like coastal NH is central to the drive. Any interesting spots there? I was thinking about a slight off-course stop in Gloucester, MA maybe.

Any recs?

Re: Between New Haven, CT and Bar Harbor, ME

  • Mystic CT Aquarium, seaport, Mystic Village

Providence RI RISD Museum, Roger Williams Zoo, great restaurants

Rockport MA kitchy shopping, great restaurants

    Kittery ME outlet shopping

Try to avoid Boston at rush 'hour'  3:30 to 7:00 is usually the worst.

  • Portsmouth, NH would be a great place to spend the night.  There is a great downtown area with tons of shops, bars, restaurants and a waterfront park.  Plus, it's only a 5-10 minute trip to the Kittery outlets so you could get in some retail therapy.  Let me know if you want restaurant/bar recommendations :)

Ogunquit, ME is nice and has a lot of options depending on what you're looking to do-close to Kittery outlets, has the Marginal Way to walk along the coast, close to Nubble Lighthouse, shops in town to walk through.

This would be my pick as well.

This is where I usually stay when travelling from Manchester to Bar Harbor area.
