Replacing vinyl with clapboard?
My hubby and I are close to closing on a house we love. The only drawback for us is that is has vinyl siding. I know many prefer the low maintenance of vinyl, but we personally prefer the over-all look and versatility of clapboard siding, in terms of color choices, etc. keeping the vinyl indefinitely is not an option. I'm wondering if anyone here has changed their siding from vinyl to clapboard. Not interested in cement siding because it still doesn't look quite as natural as I would like it to look.
What is the Sq. footage of your house and how much did it cost to replace? I know this may not be an accurate estimate for us, but I just want to know a rough ballpark.
Any other info is very much appreciated. tia.

You CAN paint vinyl siding with appropriate paint
Do you know the cost of wood clapboard siding ? It is $$$$.
Maintenance with the wood will be an ongoing expense.
I know this. I don't mind the maintenance. To us it's worth it.
I don't want to paint vinyl because underneath I will know it's still vinyl...
I'll be honest. I am literally repulsed by vinyl. The idea that a house is wrapped in plastic sends shivers up my spine. It's not natural. It's not earthy. I think even when you paint vinyl, you can tell it's vinyl by the fake grain.
When I do a search online for replacing vinyl with siding, instead I get results that point me towards replacing clapboard with Vinyl???? I don't understand the aversion people have to clapboard. Sure it's more work, but wood siding is beautiful and far more superior than vinyl, which is why it's more expensive. I'm not knocking anyone who has vinyl, please don't take it the wrong way, but when you ask about clapboard and almost 100% of the time you get someone who directs you to vinyl when you're clearly and specifically asking about clapboard, it's a bit frustrating. I feel like the entire population is a vinyl siding salesman. This is the 3rd board where I've had the same response. I know and understand the difference, and I would like clapboard.

Probably because clapboard is a style, not a material. Specify wood (whatever kind you want) clapboard and you shouldn't have an issue.

Please excuse me, but clapboard is wood, so therefore it is a material. I'm not trying to be disagreeable, just correcting a misunderstanding. I think it's clear I'm referring to wood, rather than vinyl.
The area where we'll (hopefully) be moving is a location where there are many older homes with the charm of wood clapboard, so I'd like to conform to the style of the location as well.
I believe the house we are purchasing is the only home on the street that has vinyl.

There is wood clapboard, vinyl clapboard, rubber clapboard and cement clapboard. Given the variety of "clapboard" available, you must be specific.
Calling a siding company and saying you want "clapboard siding" is akin to calling a flooring company and saying you want "wood floors".
