moving - what to take, what to chuck

we have so much stuff, like most people who move.  I'm going through everything and wondering what should come with, and what shouldn't -- i.e. did you keep artwork you may/may not hang in the new house?  all suggestions are helpful and might serve to motivate me!  Thanks in advance!

Re: moving - what to take, what to chuck

  • My plan is to take everything and as we unpack, chuck the stuff we don't want/need.  I would hate to throw something away now and then end up wanting or needing it later.  I would like to add that we will be purging a lot of stuff and I am very much looking forward to moving so I can do just this.  My poor DH isn't even going to know what's hit him.  Stick out tongue
  • I've started packing for our move that is going to happen in exactly 3 weeks and didn't realize how much stuff we had that we don't need! As I'm packing, I'm setting aside things I haven't used or even seen for atleast a year. If it's buried at the bottom of a closet, we don't need to take it with us. I didn't feel like my home now is cluttered until I started really getting at it and getting rid of stuff that is collecting dust. My goal is to live much simpler and free of useless items taking up space in my new home. If I haven't used it, worn it, looked at it in over a year, it's donated or thrown away.
  • DH and I move often for work, about every 30 months.

In general, keep everything you like, be it clothes, decor, or furniture, even if you're not using it right now.  You never know when you may have a use for it in the future.  But you have to genuinely like it to keep it.

Ditch anything you don't like.  There is NO sense in paying movers or killing your own back for old crap.  Purge your closet and all the little things like sock drawers, underwear drawers, earrings without mates, etc.

Also take care of whatever your problem areas are.  For us, this means junk mail and paperwork.  DH insisted on getting paper statements for everything for the longest time and still loves paper.  For our last move, I had 5 trash bags full of shreddings at the end of the paperwork purge.  For you, this might be mismatched coffee mugs, Tupperware without lids, or a messy linen closet.

I always like moving into a new house knowing that everything is there because I want it to be, because it contributes something to my life.  Everything without a purpose gets chucked before entering my new life.

    GL!

  • We're moving soon and I have no interest in bringing along crap, so I've been going through all the rooms and trimming the fat, little bits at a time. I'm basically trying to get rid of the guilt kept gifts from family thats nms along with other stuff I no longer use/ wear. I struggle with being a "what if" girl, but really hate clutter so I figure I can always repurchase it later in life if need be.
  • I have a 3 tierd system. Tier 1 is the stuff I want to keep and have used in the last 2 year. That stuff gets packed. Tier 2 is the stuff that is still in useable condition, but that we no longer want or have gotten actual use from in the last 2 years. That stuff gets donated. And Tier 3 is trash and recycling. We are moving in 5 weeks and have just started packing. We've already made 2 trips to Goodwill to donate stuff (hello tax write-off!), and are slowly trashing/recycling other stuff. I am a pretty vicious purger, so this is good for me.Mr. Lk is a bit more reluctant to let go of things, so I tend to do the biggest purges when he is not around.

I'm not taking anything that we aren't going to need or use in the next house (or stuff that we haven't even used in the 9 years we have lived in our current house!)  I dont see how it is worth it to use up the energy and packing materials knowing we aren't going to need some of this stuff.

This includes everything. Clothing, bedding, artwork, furniture, etc.  As I pack each room, whatever I decide isn't moving is either listed on Ebay, CL, or goes in the Trash box or Donate box.

  • LoveKiss is right up my alley. I'm a huge purger, but I'll donate everything I can dump that's still functional. Moving is the single best opportunity to clear house.
