How to tell hairstylist what color I want

I haven't done any color to my hair in 5 years, and not with this stylist.  Today I got highlights.  I probably wasn't super clear with her and showing her a pic on my iPhone maybe wasn't the greatest idea.  But she's super cool and before we started we were both on the same page that if I didn't like it, she'd put a gloss over it and we'd forget all about it.  I don't want to forget it - I want to change it.

What I have is an olive complexion with the typical accompanying dark brown hair.

What I wanted was something like these:

What I got was something more like this:

Stripes with lots of my original color.  My highlight color almost exactly matches Miley - orangey gold - and I really wanted the cooler? sandy? more substantial thing Jessica has.

What words do I use?

I'm not worried about telling her I don't like it (she knew I wasn't certain when I left), I'm trying to figure out how to explain where I want to go.

Also, if you know, do you think I can get to Jessica from Miley right now or do you think I'll have to live with it for a while?

Thanks.

  • I don't know how you can go from it...but pictures is the best way to show your colorist what you want! Maybe the phone was too small (and we assume they see what they need in a flash), so *maybe* a magazine clipping would be better, but really she should have been able to tell.

Don't know how you go from here...but GL!!!

  • Ask for an ash blonde toner, it will take away the orange and make it more of the sandy color that you want, without changing the base color.

  • Since she didn't get it from the first picture, maybe if you take in the Miley picture to show her and compare to JA's then she'll see the differences and understand?

You conveyed it pretty well to us just through text, so I think you should be able to do it pretty well in person with a trained professional. I can see why she thought you meant Miley's hair with the first pic, so I'm sure she'll understand your desired switch.

  • I have dark hair with highlights right now. My stylist called it a 50% bleach for the blonde it doesn't make it white.
