WWP&CED (job related)

Okay, ladies & gents.

So I shared yesterday that I've been scheduled for an interview for an ED position with a state affiliate of a national org. The interview is with an employee of the national org who is helping with the search.

My question is about a director-level position I was all set to apply for with the national org. I was JUST about to put in an app for it as well (as in I have the cover letter and resume ready), and the position is also a great fit for me, but I'm a little wary of applying for it now that I'm in the interview process for this other position, especially since the woman i'm interviewing with for the state position is in the department where the other position is located.

What would P&CE do? Apply anyway, and disclose at the outset that you feel your better suited for the state position and would much prefer it, but love the organization, and want to have as many options as possible to work with them? Or hold off and keep your fingers crossed that you get the position you're being interviewed for?

ETA: I'll be off and on today (off to buy some ink to print out a bunch of stuff I want to review before this interview), but I'll definitely check back to see what lovely advice you guys leave. TIA!

  • Apply anyway. I'm not sure I'd tell her what I prefer unless asked.

  • I would apply for it, but not indicate a preference for either position. I would say "I'm excited at the prospect of being a part of this organization and welcome a discussion to find the best way to serve here/best fit for the organization". I feel like not indicating a preference buys you more opportunity.

  • dh was in a very similar position after the last election cycle.  what i shared with him (and he got the job he wanted) was to apply for both and to be up front about it.  i don't see the harm.  and it shows that you are actively looking so if they want to hire you, for either position, that they should move fast.

plus, you may think that the state ed job is a better fit but the folks inside the organization may know "better" and think that you are a better fit for the national position.  most of the jobs that i have taken in dc are more about fit and less about resume.

    good luck!

  • You should still apply. An interview isn't a job offer. You shouldn't let any opportunity pass you by.

  • I think this would be an ideal item to work into the interview process - which I always remind people they are interviewing the company, as they are being interviewed by the company.

Perhaps expound on what you've learned or what you know about the company, and how excited you are about this opportunity, and how many opportunities the company seems to have... including this other position you had also become aware of, which also sounded like a good fit.  But hey, you're just thrilled to be able to meet with (fill in woman's name) to see what potential there is for you and this company to work together.
