We found a dog and need tips
We
found a stray dog yesterday with a collar and no tags. She's a friendly
girl who seemed healthy (other than fleas which we treated) She doesn't
have a microchip, no lost dog reports, I've posted ads and gone around
the neighborhood along with leaving messages at the humane society and
the Police station.
What else can I do, and other than food and a leash
what things would be good to have for the dog? It's been a long time since we had a dog around.
We also plan on keeping
her if no one claims her.
Re: We found a dog and need tips
If you haven't (which it kinda sounds like you have) take the dog to the vet just to make sure everything is a-ok. Some newspapers will allow you to post a "found" ad for free or at a discounted price. You would be able to reach a larger audience, so to speak.
On the same note, you can check the "lost" ads. I'd def. give it awhile before ruling out the dog being found.
In regards to "things" you might need - food and a leash are a good start until you know for sure the dog won't be claimed. A few toys might be a good idea. Later, you can invest in a bed, more expensive toys, possibly some other "fancy" things that might look fun when you go to the pet store. You may also need a crate if you end up needing to crate train.
Thanks, luckily she seems housebroken or we are really good at knowing when to take her outside.
We're taking her to our vet today to get a good checkup and heartworm prevention.
Uhh this makes me so sad. Took her everywhere today and nothing showed up. So we got her a heartworm, parasite, flea prevention pill and left her picture.
Why can't people just put tags on their dog or get a microchip?
lurker here, we found a dog last summer. Contact the agency that has legal authority over stray dogs. Ours was the county shelter. I had the choice of handing her over-they'd do a 3 or 5 day hold (can't remember) then would have evaluated her for adoption. My other choice was to give the shelter my info & the dog's info, & after 3 weeks she'd be legally free for us to keep, rehome, etc. I had to follow the legal process, otherwise someone could have claimed she was theirs & we'd be out of luck. In our case the dog was a mess, to the point that my vet said it was criminal neglect, even abuse, and she said the shelter would have put her down after the stray hold. I would take her to the vet as soon as possible, just so you know what you're dealing with. Also, be prepared for the dog's behavior to change as it becomes more comfortable with you & your family. I had our dog in obedience classes and had her spay scheduled before the 3 weeks were up b/c she was turning into a loud, crazy dog as she got more & more comfortable with us!
