Insurgent Talk (spoilers)

ETA:

I didn't really have any educated guesses at what the big "secret" was. I thought that maybe the world might be perfect outside of Chicago but I wasn't real invested in that theory. The brain-wipe was a pretty-interesting turn of events.

Second point - really wanted to slap Four upside the head; it was pretty obvious where the plot was going. Of course the factionless were going to double cross the Dauntless. Duh.

Overall it was an entertaining few hours of reading. I will definitely have to re-read both of them right before the last one comes out.

I didn't like Tris' brother turning on her. Not at all. For less than a minute I thought about stopping the book in protest and then I realized it wouldn't hurt anyone but me.

Re: Insurgent Talk (spoilers)

  • Having grown up watching my sister/cousin deal with really conflicted feelings about her Bio Mom I could understand what was going on with Four and why he chose to trust his Mom, even with the double cross being so clear.

I loved that they didn't have a love triangle but had them deal with their issues between the 2 of them.

I'm interested to see what Caleb thinks tris doesn't know. None of the characters are all good or bad so I suspect we'll find out that Caleb had his reasons, which we may or may not agree with.

I loved that Four came around in the end even if it was at the last minute.

  • I had to scroll down since I am only to the point where Tris just took the truth serum and it is KILLING me that I haven't had read time lately

  • Yeah, I was pissed about Caleb, too. Can we have SOME sympathetic members of Erudite, please?! For a "necessary" faction, they sure seem to be jerks.

I did like it (I think Veronica Roth really nails Tris's "voice," better than most YA authors do). But it seemed very much like the second book a trilogy. A Second book in a planned trilogy always seems very... neither here nor there to me. Everything is already set up in the first book, we don't reach a lot of conclusions at the end. With LOTR I know plenty of people like the Two Towers, but I think it's the most boring book.

With Insurgent I was like, "Oh, okay, Tris is risking herself on an adventure again." "Oh, okay, Tris is in Erudite headquarters AGAIN." "Oh, okay, Tris is crying about Will AND her shoulder hurts again." The thing about Will, though, is that if I shot someone in self defense, especially a friend, I'd be a hot mess, too. So I can't say the author overdid Tris's feelings in that department, because if Tris got over it easily, I would have criticized that, too. But it was repetitive to read.

And Four was pissing me off, too.

You make a very good point, thinking back to other series I have read, there always seems to be a book or two that is slower or "filler". Specifically thinking of the Outlander series. I adore the entire series but I definitely prefer some of the books over others.

  • Just finished it last night. It's kinda all over the map. They keep bouncing around the city and yeah like PP said every other paragraph mentions her shoulder. Overall I liked it though. I like that there's no love triangle and just a relationship and its struggles between Four and Tris.
