Re: Almond milk

  • H can't do dairy, so we have all kinds of not-milk in the house.

Rice, Soy, Hemp, Multigrain, Coconut, Almond.

He prefers not-Soy, as, well, soy can mess you up.

Rice is OK, but it's watery and weird to work with.

Coconut has a tendency to make everything taste like suntan lotion.

Multigrain is hard to find. We get it sometimes at Trader Joe's, but I'm not sure I've seen it elsewhere.

I think Hemp and Almond are the favorites around here. Taste good. No weird taste to mess with other flavors.

The girl freaking loves vanilla-Almond milk.

Cow milk isn't particularly great for you. Of the alternatives, I'd think, personally, that Almond would be among the nutritionally better ones, given that it's protein, not sugar (or grain, that converts to sugar)...

  • From what I know of it, its a good substitute for regular milk...personally though I'm not a fan of the flavor.

However, my coconut milk hazelnut coffee creamer?  LOVE.

  • Almond milk is good but can be loaded with sugar if you aren't careful about what you are buying. It can be a challenge to buy just plain, unsweetened almond milk.

I love making oatmeal with plain almond milk though. yum

  • Yep, it's the vanilla almond milk.  I even like it.  She likes the chocolate as well.

I wonder about the actual calcium in it.

  • It tastes like liquified almonds. Liquids that don't come from mammals shouldn't be called milk. It should be called drink, like the the beloved orange drink of my youth.

  • Momi, thats awesome!

They are putting in a TJs in Patriot Place, which I'm super excited about. I hate driving up to Framingham, so I never actually get to TJs.

I don't think that it's about calcium. Lots of calcium in green leefy veg. Don't stress about the lack of milk.

There's no such thing as soy milk. It's soy juice. But they couldn't sell soy juice, so they called it soy milk. Because anytime you say soy juice, you actually... start to gag. And they put soy milk in with my moo-cow milk, and it doesn't belong there, because we all know there's no such thing as Soy milk 'cause there's no soy titty, is there?

  • It's good. I really like coconut milk, too, though. Not the thick kind in a can, but Co Delicious makes a coconut milk "beverage" which you can get in a half gallon in the refrigerated section. It comes in regular, unsweetened and vanilla, I think. The consistency is like milk, so thin, and I really like it.

I don't really like soy "dairy" products because I think they leave a soy after taste. Almond and coconut make the creamiest, smoothest milks, I think, although they do have a little fat. Plus you don't get the negative effects of the soy estrogens, if you're into that. Rice is a little watery. I don't think I've had hemp milk, but I've had hemp protein.

ETA: I agree that plant milks are frankly better than cow's milk. You can argue about them being "processed" but organic almond milk is something that, IMO, is fine for humans to consume. When you think about it, cow's milk is designed to fatten calves, not humans. And that's not even getting into the hormones and antibiotics. Not saying I don't love cheese as much as the next person, but when you really think it out, it's weird that we're probably the only species that drinks milk as adults.

Rice, Soy, Hemp, Multigrain, Coconut, Almond.

We have a rotation between these as well. She won't drink rice by itself, so we usually mix the rice milk with another one.

I don't give soy very often because I worry about all the hormones.

I beg to differ. Soy titty is what men develop when they drink too much soy milk. :)

We mostly use hemp milk. Warner is lactose intolerant and he loooooves hemp milk. If we're traveling and run out, I'll sub in coconut milk or rice milk. For whatever reason he does not like almond milk. I think it tastes great and find the hemp milk to be kind of nasty, but he likes it, so we keep buying it.

Where do you get hemp milk? Would I need a specialty store for that? I have to stock up on rice milk because they don't sell it in my small town.

I usually buy it at Whole Foods because they always have a lot in stock. I usually buy Tempt brand, but it they are out I can sub in some other brand. I liked Hemp Dream a lot, but they don't stock it anymore.

Lately, I've seen Tempt brand hemp milk at our Safeway and at Harris Teeter, so I guess it's getting more main stream.

  • We don't have any of those stores in the state (Iowa). I stock up on Rice Milk when we go to Trader Joe's, so I'll do some research and see if there's any stores that carry it.

    (sorry no clicky)

I can be on your door step in 2 days with Amazon Prime ;-) And that's actually a bit cheaper than what I pay at Whole Foods even with a 10% case discount...I'm glad I looked this up for you! :-)
