Things to do in/around St. Petersburg, FL

I have a work conference in St. Petersburg, FL at the beginning of October. DH is going to fly down with me for a 4 - 5 day vacation before the conference starts. Neither of us have been to any part of Florida before. What should we do in/around St. Petersburg? We are totally taking the drive to Harry Potter world (or whatever it's called - I'm a huge fan, poor DH!). But that's all we have planned so far. So obviously we are willing to venture outside. We definitely want to get some beach time in, but we also like adventurous stuff and I love animals...and food. We don't get to travel much so I want to make the most out of our time there.

  • Check out Busch Gardens in Tampa. Maybe 30-40 minutes from St Pete?

  • I will add it to the list. Thanks!
  • My mom lives around Tampa....when we've gone to visit we've gone to Pass a Grille (sp?) beach and went swimming with manatees, which was amazing http://www.floridalogue.com/swimming-with-manatees.html
  • Ahhhh, ktmae55 that is awesome! Definitely going to try the manatees - thanks :)
  • The Salvadore Dali museum is amazing! It's the largest collection of his art in North America. Some of the painting are huge, so it's really worth seeing them in person.

The Dali museum isn't far from the downtown waterfront, so you could make a day of it shopping, dining and walking around the waterfront area. It's been a while since I've been there, so I can't remember any specific restaurants to recommend.

If you're up for driving to Tampa, the Florida Aquarium is very nice and would probably take up the better part of a day. Historic Ybor City is another nice Tampa destination. Lots of good Cuban food there.
