Update - Funeral Attendance - WWYD?

UPDATE: My aunt, who lives in Florida and has her act together, flew up to PA, rented a car and is staying with my mom for the week. She will drive them up to the funeral and then drive them back to my mom's house. I asked her if she thought I should come and she said it wasn't necessary. So it all worked out.

However, we've now decided to make a last minute trip to PA. Aunt has not meet DD yet and I'm not sure when we will be in Florida next.

Hello,

I'm not sure what to do. My great aunt died and although we weren't terribly close, she wasn't exactly a stranger. Viewing is tomorrow and her funeral is  Wednesday am. Going would involve driving to my mother's in western PA (4 hours) and then on to BFE PA (another 3-4 hours). My mother no longer feels comfortable driving by herself and there is nobody to take her, so if I don' t go, she probably won't either. This is her last surviving aunt.

I'm not sure if I can leave my DD at home with DH (who is a caring, attentive and  perfectly capable dad) because he is working long hours this week. If an emergency arises, it may take him 3 hours to get to her. We have emergency contacts. Also, I frankly don't want to leave DD. She's still nursing (and has no teeth yet) and it doesn't seem like either of us is ready to wean (esp. her). She only nurses a handful of times a day. DH can't go.

My sister has said we could go up together, but won't be able to leave until 9 or 10 tonight.  Assuming we take DD, I will be up talking to my sister while she drives and then up at 5:20AM with DD. Sister also wants to leave after the funeral, drop mom off and come straight home, which is fine.

I could go by myself, but my mom's health is not so great. So I would be taking care of DD (16 months) and my mom. I can't decide between going or not going.

Last but not least, Wednesday is DH's bdayTongue Tied

Suggestions/advice, WWYD?

Re: Update - Funeral Attendance - WWYD?

  • Can your sister take your mom by herself?
  • That would be too easy, although that is a great idea. I neglected to mention that my sister " doesn't want to drive up there by myself". This is the same woman who will fly to the Dominican Republic and take a 4 hour bus ride by herself no problem, but can't handle driving by herself...

  • I'd probably go w/ your sister and DD.  I'd just lay it out for her that you need to sleep b/c your LO is up at 5:45.

  • I understand that it's not good timing but if I were you, I would go for my Mom's sake. I'm sure she'll be really thankful she had you and your sister to drive her so she can be with her loved ones at this awful time.
