We went to the beach tonight with my mom and sister, hoping to see the solar eclipse. Instead it was insanely foggy, but since we were there and there were no other people on the beach, we let the dogs run around.
Dexter decided to take off after some birds down the beach. Once he disappeared in the fog and wasn't responding to my calls, I went after him. I would glimpse him and then he would disappear again (yes, it was that foggy). I got probably a mile away from my family, and he wouldn't come and just kept going farther down the beach, in the waves, up the dunes, after birds. Anywhere but toward me or in the right direction back to the family.
It was starting to get darker, I couldn't see more than 100 ft in either direction, all the dunes were looking the same, it was cold, I didn't have shoes, I didn't have my phone, and my damnn dog wouldn't come. I started bawling thinking I was lost and no one would be able to find me. I can easily turn situations around in my mind and was starting to try to think through how I could get back to one of the parking lots and if I couldn't do that then Maggie (she hadn't left my side, especially after I started crying) would likely help me keep warm until search and rescue could find me, because David would call them at some point, right? (yeah... me = paranoid freak)
David finally did find me (I had been making x marks in the sand to try to find my way back, he noticed them when he came after me), and Dexter finally got tired and just walked right up to me, like "okay mom, we can go home now."
Needless to say, Dex won't be off leash any time soon (more training, yay). And I feel like an idiot. But I suppose not as much of an idiot as if search and rescue had had to be called...
Re: well... today was an adventure
Ugh, I hate it when pets just don't get it! We like to let the kitties in the backyard every once in a while to play in the grass and graze. Well, one of them decided to go off on a little adventure. Needless to say, they don't get to go outside unless we hold them anymore.
Did you get to see the solar eclipse? It was very cool! Like an idiot when we went into the backyard I looked into the sky to see where the sun was - OMG, the light was so intense, and I must have looked for less than 1/2 a second! I certainly hope that people didn't suffer eye injuries.
