Talk to me about working with clay...

I'm gathering ideas for my son's 2nd birthday party in Sept. We're doing a Very Hungry Caterpillar theme and I'd like a caterpillar for the cake topper. I came across this one on etsy, which is SO cute:

Those of you who work with clay, is it worth it for me to pay the $22 or is this something I could probably recreate on my own? I'm crafty, but I don't have experience with clay. I'd be happy with the general idea-- I don't have to have all of the awesome swirling details that the seller has!

Re: Talk to me about working with clay...

  • Clay isn't hard to work with, I'm not sure that the clay would dry and be shiny like in the picture. I've done some small nick-nacks with clay and it's not hard- especially with ideas.  You'd probably either make it all and glue it together (maybe connecting with a wire?) or bake it in stages.  I've done a little bear and baked in stages to create it, using some wire.  You can probably check out you tube for instructions.  Joann's usually has clay reasonable prices and sometimes has it on sale, you'd want to buy all your colors, I'm not 100% sure on mixing to get that swirling effect - but the bug is adorable!  My next project (a year in the making) will be wine charms! I've had fimo and sculpey III before.

Thanks for the advice! I think I'll buy some and play with it to see how it goes-- that way I'll have plenty of time to order one if it doesn't go well. It's not that expensive, I just always try to DIY if I can. The detail in hers is really cool though, and I could put it on a shelf in DS's room after the party if I splurged on it!
