Fashion experts: Color that will compliment this fabric?

I'm making a dress in this style

 dress

using this patterned fabric

 fabric

and need to make a sash which will loop through the top of the dress but can't decide on a color. What solid color sash do you think would best compliment the bodice of this dress using that fabric?

 FYI: On closer inspection, it seems that the color inside those flower-like graphics on the dress are more like a pale gold.

 Thanks!

Re: Fashion experts: Color that will compliment this fabric?

  • I think the royal blue, black, or white could all work for the sash/tie. However, have you considered doing the dress in a solid black or royal blue and making the sash out of the patterned fabric?

    I just see this dress as being very loose fitting and with a fabric pattern such as this with so many large shapes, it might appear big all over and not very becoming when worn. With a solid color as the main staple (like in the pic you provided) it would probably be more sophisicated looking as well as slimming. Just my two cents...

  • Is it for an adult? When I do pillowcase dresses, which is basically what this is, I go contrasty. If it's meant to be "fun", maybe a bright gold or the teal color. The fabric would play into this, too. A silk challis could work with a metallic but a cotton broadcloth might call for the boring black. Grosgrain could work.

    This was my first question, too. I'm hung up on using this style of dress for an adult.

    A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.
  • I think the royal blue, black, or apricot

    Yes, it is for an adult. I'm following the tutorial found here: http://lookslikespiltmilk.blogspot.com/2011/08/i-wish-i-was-dressmaker.html

    I made one for my 30 year old niece in a chocolate brown silk linen sans the goofy bow. She belts it with a matte pewter belt; it looks surprisingly chic with flat sandals for really hot weather.
