Tips for a Sewing Beginner

kekiskekis member

I learned to sew during Home Ec MANY years ago and just yesterday received a new sewing machine for my birthday.  After taking a beginners sewing class last week, I am excited to start a new crafting hobby.  I don't have a lot of storage space (due to my hoarding of scrapbook stuff!) so I'll take any organization tips you may have.  What would you recommend that I need other than a few bobbins, sewing scissors, etc.?  My first project will be sewing throw pillow covers.

Any sites, tips, hints, whatever you have would be appreciated!  tia

**ETA: I've checked the FAQs - just wanted any additional ideas you might have.

Re: Tips for a Sewing Beginner

  • Two other tools that I have (and use a lot) are a cutting mat & rotary cutter.  I just recently bought the rotary cutter and oh my...I should not have waited so long.

My organization skills are pretty much nada so I can't help you there.

Throw pillows are a great starter project and pretty hard to mess up.  I make all of mine with an envelope type back so I don't have to sew in a zipper and can still wash them.

Thank you!  I added a rotary cutter to my amazon order, so I'll check it out when it arrives.  :)   I did make a pillow cover.  I'll post a pic when I upload it to my computer.  Try not to laugh!

  • SEAM RIPPER. Hands down, most important "extra." your machine probably came with one, but it never hurts to have several (sadly). I also use my rotary cutter and self healing mat constantly, and you'll want to get some kind of a pincushion and some basic pins. Other accessories I tend to gather as I do different projects than need different things. Good luck and can't wait to see your pillow cover!

  • I'll go ahead and third a rotary cutter and self-healing mat. I used to HATE cutting fabric. Now it's a breeze!

  • IRON!

No seriously, iron everything. Iron before you start, after you cut, between each step, finished garment, EVERY.THING!

  • i'm a new sewer too and & have found you tube to be really helpful.  there is a girl - the crafty gemini - who has lots of videos for beginners - she really explains things well & for the novice.
  • SCREW UP!

Yes, I said it. Screw up. Take scrap fabric and start sewing, cutting, measuring. Try it 2 or 3 times before you try it on the fabric you really want, trust me you will feel more confiedent when actually start to make your fabric!

  • I really can't offer you any pieces of advice... it's outside my field...

  • In my many years of sewing, I never had a rotary cutter or mat until last year.  Now I don't know what I would do without them!

I would suggest a box to keep everything in... sewing box or other organizational box would be great.  I love the magnetic pin "cushions" since they help if I ever drop pins on the floor.  And probably not immediately, but in the future when you are sewing more, you will want something to organize your thread spools.

Ditto on what everyone above said, too!

Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

  • I also recommend everything above but once you get a lot of fabric and need a better way for organization I love this way that I found.
