New Sister-in-law

My big brother just got engaged and I'm really happy for him, I like his FI a lot. I am that type A personality and really loved my wedding planning years ago.  They have similar tastes and have expressed similar desires for wedding plans. I'd love to help her, but don't want to be the 'know it all' or bother her, she has asked for some help, but not on specifics, so without overstepping, I want to be helpful and really involved but I also know that she needs to have her own experiences planning.

Any suggestions on how to cultivate a good relationship and also be really helpful without bugging her?

Re: New Sister-in-law

  • I went/am going through the same thing right now with my sister.  Her wedding is in a month.  I handed over my wedding binder.  I told her to ask me any questions.  I also told her that I know she wants her own wedding so I wouldn't be offended if she didn't do everything like mine.  She already had an idea for food and location which will be lot different from mine.  She is using my DJ, but her music preferences are different from mine.

Just let her know that you're willing to answer any questions/help with whatever she needs and that you won't be offended for any differences.  I let my sister come to me and I've helped her when she asked.

  • My sister is getting married next July and I'm going through the same thing. It's hard because my sister wants people's opinions in everything, but she already has her mind made up. She gets pissed if we say we don't like something. Her and I have very different tastes as well.

I would let her know that you're available to help if she needs a hand with anything. My SIL is 12 years old, so she couldn't really help with any decision making. She helped a lot with the DIY stuff. If anything else, you could at least be an extra helping hand when needed.

  • I think just being honest, letting her know exactly what you wrote. Maybe by email? But, prepare yourself that she may not want your help or input. GL.
