Anyone lived in Fort Huachuca?

Hello ladies - I am currently at Fort Riley, KS, and we'll be PCS's to Fort Huachuca probably some time in the next 6 months. (no official orders yet)

Has anyone lived there before? Any good places to find housing or places to avoid? Looks like it's hot as Hades there.. yaaaay. Hmm

Re: Anyone lived in Fort Huachuca?

  • I don't know anything about it but I've found facebook groups to be really helpful for these kinds of things. It seems like most bases have a spouse group online that is really helpful so you may look into that. Also, there is the group "moving house for the military spouse" that is specifically dedicated to this topic and provides a LOT of photos of base housing. If it isn't on that site you can usually find someone who has lived there who will give you advice!
  • You will more than likely be offered on post housing when you get there.  If you do not plan to buy I would reccomend living on post because its new housing (duplexs) with lots of little play grounds. For the money you are better off getting on post. We payed over $1000 a month for a two bedroom apartment and we quickly moved on post to a 3 bedroom house.

It a dry heat in the summer so its not so bad. Its cool at night though so always keep a jacket in the car, the canyons are nice to explore, and you are only 30min. from Bisbee and Tombstone (it was fun).  There is also a nice lake to go camping at with fishing and swiming. Sierra Vista is great at having things for families at the park. I liked it but we are outdoor people.

If you want to know anything else you can PM me

  • we just left Huachuca a few months ago and we loved it. we were only there for the captains career course and we want to try to get back. We only rented a small apartment because we were only there for 6 months but they where expanding on post housing when we got there. There are a lot of nice homes in the town but there are also a lot of 50+ communities and TDY homes so we found it difficult to find something to rent within a reasonable price.

As far as places to stay away from, I believe it was North Street that we were told to stay away from but you'll see the "bad" areas when you get there, its obvious if you go down that road. But for the most part its pretty quiet.

Arizona is pretty centrally located. As PP poster said you are close to Tombstone and Bisbee, there is also a few wineries close by and you can do the "wine hop" and go from place to place for an afternoon. Tuscon isn't far either!

  • I lived there for a year, but it was over 4 years ago. We lived on post, in the older housing, which I am sure has been torn down.

As others have said, on-post housing is the way to go. Rent out in Sierra Vista is pricey for what you get. There are a lot of retired people out there, so be prepared for that. There are some rough parts of town, but on the 2 main streets, you'll be ok. Everything is located on those two main streets for the most part.

All things considered, I loved it there. In fact, now that DH is out, he is looking for work as an army civilian, and seriously looking in the area, we'd love to go back. It is a dry heat, which I never truly appreciated until we moved to TN. It makes a difference, just stay hydrated, and you'll be fine. Everywhere you go will have AC. Tombstone and Bisbee were fun, but we loved being up in Tucson.

  • We will only be there for  months as well, for training, then who knows where!

I'm not sure if they would let us move on post for that amount of time. I may try and contact the housing office there and see what's up. We have no idea yet when we will be headed that way.

I'm from Indiana, so I can definitely appreciate the dry heat!!!! Indianapolis is ridiculously humid in the summer!

We don't have kids yet, so if we moved on post, we'd probably get something teeny-tiny. :( I just miss having SPACE!! Seems like anywhere near military bases is super expensive.

Thanks for the insight ladies! I have looked for FB groups and found a couple small, closed groups. I'll keep looking! :)  I've never "PCS'd" before, only moved my stuff from home to base, so this will be a new experience!

  • I'm here now!!!

There are many, many extended stay places in town because of the schools on post.  When I first moved here I lived in what was then called Carroll Drive Apartments.  It now has been bought out by Rodeway Inn.  I'm not sure if the deals are still the same, but when I was there I think I paid like $25 a night which was by far the cheapest I could find.  It was right outside post and not the fanciest, but I felt safe there with just my kids and myself as DH hadn't joined us here yet.

The area is beautiful and very historic so there are tons of things to do.  The heat really doesn't bother me at all.  We have a swamp cooler in our house and I honsetly have not even turned it on yet for  the summer.

Feel free to ask questions if you have them here for PM me if you'd like.
