BF mommas

 I upped my fenugreek to 3-3x a day and I am still taking the Brewers yeast. I am still pumping about 4oz a session and the rest of the time she's on the boob. Ive tried drinking beer and I am pretty sure I can't drink any more water. 

I try to eat pretty healthy but I think I am on lying taking in so many calories and it might be too few- got any healthy but high calorie snack ideas (besides avocado)?

 

Also, on an unrelated note is biotin safe to take? My hair is falling out at a rapid rate and some friends/family have started to comment.

  • There is more milk plus supplement which has fenugreek along with a few other milk producing herbs. Try to snack on almonds and eat more oatmeal. Both help with milk production. 

     

    Not sure about biotin, but your hair falling our is DEF normal. It's not going to stop for a few months.  

  • I remember after K I thought I was going to go bald.  Now in the shower i come out with handfuls of hair and its all coming back to me

    I have no advice on the BF since I had to stop for other reasons, but I think that it is great that you are still going strong!  Just watch what herbs you are taking, that can make a big difference and spices as well.

  • Honestly 4 oz was about all I ever got pumping (at most 5). I didn't try any supplements bc to me that seemed normal.  I was able to keep EBF bc I only work part time.  I never actually pumped as much as she drank while I was away.  I just kept up by pumping every night before bed.  That way I made it to about 11.5 months.  At that point I was barely getting anything with the pump and started supplementing.  Interestingly though even when I stopped pumping I still nursed for a few months.  My supply stayed for her much longer than it did for the pump.  

     

    As far as the hair goes it will stop soon.  Mine was the worst from maybe 3-6 months pp.  But biotin is in prenatal vitamins so I'm sure it's safe.

  • pumping 4oz is great and a good supply - i don't know that you need to go crazy with supplements. my kids never took more than 4-5oz in a bottle at a time anyway.

     

    breastmilk changes as your baby grows - so while it is the same quantity liquid wise that you pump, it's components are ever changing to meet baby's needs - your baby likely gets all she needs from those 4 oz.

     

    i ate oatmeal daily - add some ground flax seed to it too - and a bit of brown sugar and craisins and sliced almonds

    drink milk - it's filling and healthy and extra calories

    almonds and/or trail mix

    add homemade granola to yogurt (low-fat instead of fat-free for extra calories)

    hummus and pita

    i ate a lot of peanut butter - on high fiber english muffins, on toasted homemade banana bread, on celery

    triscuits and sliced cheeses and grapes

     

    i also never worried about serving sizes - i ate when i was hungry until i felt full. i ate a ton of fruit too - extra "water" in a sense
