Did you spend time in Germany at some point?  I have a (sort of) funny story.  I went there in 2002 and it was the first time I've traveled to a non-English speaking country without knowing a single word of the language spoken there.  The worst part is that I had German language tapes, but was so busy at work before my trip that I had no time to study.  I digress...

So I'm on the plane and see a woman and child who are American and talking about living in Germany.  I asked the woman if I would struggle there without knowing the language and she said "probably."  Yikes.

We land and I cannot find my way to the subway.  I've traveled the world extensively so I'm no novice, and German isn't exactly Russian or Chinese with their foreign characters, so this does not bode well for me.  I finally asked a flight attendant to point me toward the subway, which she did.

I take the subway into Frankfurt, get off, and literally cannot find my way out of the subway.  All of the other subway passengers headed in 13 different directions so there was no obvious way to go.  I wandered around the subway for ages before finding my way out.  At that point, I was just a hot mess.

I was only in Germany for a week, but it's amazing how quickly you learn the language when survival demands it.  LOL!!

  • LOL!

I've never lived in Germany, but my mother is German. ?My Oma lived with us when I was little, and she refused to speak English, so that is where I picked up the language skills. ?

I wish it was that easy for me to learn Czech. ?I've definitely been a mess here on more than one occasion.
