Must sees/dos/eats in CA

DH and I are planning a two week trip to California this summer. We're flying into San Diego and then driving up the coast spending at least one night (each)  in Santa Monica, Santa Barbara, Morro Bay, and Monterey. After that, we head over to Yosemite for 3 days, and then up to San Francisco for 4 days. I have pretty good lists of things to do/see in San Fran and San Diego, but was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for things to see/do or places to eat in Santa Monica, Santa Barbara, Morro Bay, and Monterey, bearing in mind we won't be spending that long in any of these places. I guess i"m looking for the highlights.

Of course, any recommendations for San Diego, San Francisco and Yosemite are welcome as well! Thanks in advance!!

Santa Monica pier. Maybe rent a bike a bike along the beach from Santa Monica to Venice beach. Nice ride. Venice beach has funky shops.
  • Sounds like an awesome road trip.  We did the PCH from San Francisco to Pismo Beach, it was so fun and the scenery was amazing!

To do/see in Monterey - the Aquarium, Fisherman's Wharf, Cannery Row & Pebble Beach.  Go to First Awakenings for the best breakfasts ever!

  • For Santa Monica, eat on Third Avenue and if you like museums the Getty is amazing with gorgeous views. The pier is fun but all of Santa Monica is very touristy.

For Santa Barbara, walk State Street and walk up the tower of the courthouse for an amazing areal view. If you like to hike, there are great hikes in Santa Barbara. There's wine tasting on the lower part of State Street. Walk out on the harbor and to the end of the pier where the boats are. If you like seafood, eat at Brophie's overlooking the boats. If you like zoos, the Santa Barbara zoo is fantastic. If you want great Mexican food go to Los Arroyos in Montecito.

  • In Santa Barbara they have the "urban wine trail" which is a bunch of wine tasting rooms that are in walking distance from each other. Most hotels and resaurants will have the brochure with the map of the wineries. The "urban wine trail" is also walking distance from the beach. It is a great way to taste some good wine, but not have to worry about driving. There is also a trolley/bus run by the city that for 25cents each way will take you between downtown Santa Barbara and the wine trail closer to the beach.

On your drive north stop for a photo op at Bixby Bridge. There are places to pull off on the side of the road for a gorgeous view of the coast and a great photo with the bridge in the background.

The only thing to really see/do in Morro Bay is Morrow Rock.

Monterey is great! DH and I love taking a long weekend trip to Monterey. As a previous poster said don't miss the aquarium, the exhibits are great. Cannery Row is right next to the aquarium and has shops, restaurants and an opportunity to get in the water, but it will be cold and crowded. One of our favorite restaurants in Monterey is Bistro Moulin, a little pricey, but fabulous food and wonderful service and wine list. If you are in the Monterey area Carmel is not too far away and Carmel by the Sea (like downtown Carmel) is an adorable area with lots of shops and wonderful restaurants.
