OMG! THIS is terrible... "Baby Decapitated At Birth"

No amount of money could make me feel any better if I was this woman, but she should sue the hell out of these doctors!

 http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2012/05/21/baby-decapitated-at-birth-horror-in-brazilian-hospital_n_1532327.html?ref=mostpopular

A 14lb baby was decapitated as doctors struggled to deliver him naturally last week, it has been reported.

The tragedy occurred after the child?s 22-year-old mother went into labour at theHospital Santa Isabel in the north of Aracaju, Brazil, the country?s G1 Globo website said.

The woman, named as Maria Viera Alcilne Amoin, apparently became aware of a problem when there was an audible crack and she heard one of the doctor?s shout: ?Marcos, are you crazy??

The baby?s shoulders reportedly became stuck in the birth canal and his head was separated from his body.

Ms Amoin, who is a mother to three other children, was rushed into surgery where an emergency caesarean section was performed to remove the child?s body from her pelvis.

The woman?s cousin, Gilmara Azevedo dos Santos, told G1 Globo: ?She went through great suffering, it was hours and hours and a lot of pain and discomfort, with doctors pushing on her stomach, trying everything to make the baby come out."

Mr Santos added: ?We want justice and we will seek the State Prosecutor, because my cousin was the victim of medical malpractice.?

The hospital?s clinical director told G1 Globo the fetus was already dead before the incident.

The website quoted a statement which read: ?There was a problem with the baby?s shoulder. Although the head had passed through the vagina of the mother, the child?s body was prevented from leaving because of the mother?s pelvis. We tried several surgical procedures, but the only solution was to remove the baby?s head.?

But Mr Santos disputes this version of events, and stated: ?Everything was fine until her arrival at the hospital. She told us when she arrived she was subjected to an evaluation where it was found the child?s heart was beating. This proves the baby was alive and not dead like the doctors are saying now.?

The baby?s body remains at the hospital morgue as a formal investigation into his death is launched.

In 2006 a baby in Louisville, Kentucky, was decapitated at birth after it became entangled in the cerclage, a string similar to a shoelace.

The string ?acted as a noose? and caused the decapitation as the child?s body was pulled from the womb, AZCentral reported.

The child?s mother, Micheatria Donelson, was awarded nearly $1.4m compensation for pain and suffering.

  • Holy crap! I've never had children and don't know just how fragile they are, but I would imagine, wouldn't you need to pull pretty hard to decapitate one?

  • I would imagine so. I mean, if the Mother heard the crack, this guy had to have really tugged hard. It's just crazy and terrible!

I keep checking snopes to see if this is real but so far no entry on this story.

  • If you are feeling strong, google shoulder dystocia. That is what happened here. It's an incredible emergency, as the baby can die after only being trapped for a few minutes. One of the recommended manoeuvres (Zavanelli) to get the baby out usually results in death (if they're not already dead). There's another one where they cut the ligaments holding your pelvis together to try and make space.

I think this description, from a dry medical article, shows how much it panics birth professionals

Shoulder dystocia usually is heralded by the classic ?turtle sign.? After the fetal head delivers, it retracts back onto the maternal perineum. As maternal efforts to expel the fetal body continue, the fetal shoulder becomes further impacted behind the symphysis pubis. If the physician is alone, immediate assistance should be recruited. Additional support from anesthesia, nursing, and pediatrics also should be recruited. The mother should be instructed to stop pushing while attempts are made to dislodge the impacted shoulder. Most cases of shoulder dystocia resolve within a few minutes, although it may seem longer.

The cousin is as dumb as a box of rocks.

Because the baby was alive before hours and hours of being stuck, it therefore must have remained alive?

  • I really really regret opening and reading this post today.  Holy crap.

Shoulder dystocias are pretty bad wherever they are born. It's things like cord prolapses that you want to be near an OR for.

Oy, I would say so. I felt like my OB was tugging pretty hard, but I had an epi so I wasn't really "feeling" anything.

    But that is horrible.

  • If the baby was already dead, pulling on its head doesn't do any good, why they wouldn't just do an automatic c-section to get the entire body out is beyond me.. this is horrifying!
