Thoughts on Pvnta Cana

Not sure if the P-word gets censored :)

DH and I are trying to decide between P-Cana and Guanacaste, Costa Rica for our 1st anniversary.  It would be the beg of Sept for ~1 week.  because we have a travel certificate for a few days, it is limited to these 2 places.  We are normally "rent a car and go explore, snorkel, drink, beach, hike" people.  I have done an AI but DH has not.

Is P-Cana super resorty, like Cancun?  Any excursions you rec?

Which spot would you choose?

Re: Thoughts on Pvnta Cana

  • I have been to PC but not Costa Rica but I know PC you usually do not leave the resort unless for certain excursions. I know form other people that you can explore Costa Rica all you want. I hated PC for the reason that I couldn't just go and explore the culture. Just my opinion.
  • ive been to both. depending on which part of CR you visit the snorkeling might suck as it's rough pacific side with black sand. caribbean side is white sand. i enjoyed both for different reasons.

PC was ok for snorkeling-nothing specular but it was ok. the beaches were nice.

in PC you CAN go and explore the culture if you want to-there's really not all that  much around which is the issue. the people are fine and super nice.

in CR it's not the easiset to get around on your own-some crap roads etc.. but for the most part it's fine.

really-you have to do your research on each area to see what appeals to you more. as much as i LOVE to go and explore in CR sometimes i want a vacay where i dont ahve to do anything but sit by the pool, read a book and have a margarita.

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • I wasn't super impressed with PC and H and I have no desire to ever go back.  It just had no personality to us.

We loved CR.  Beautiful surroundings, lots to do, super nice people.  Hands down, I give my vote to CR!

  • I've never been to CR but I have been to PC.  I have to echo the posts above.  Not much to do outside of your resort in PC unless you are going on a planned excursion.  There really isn't much to see.  Therefore if you just want a relaxing vacation hanging at the beach or by the pool at your resort, PC is fine for that.  If you want to get out and explore/sightsee, PC might not be the place to go.  I too really have no desire to return  to PC.

  • From what you've said of your travel style, I'd go with Costa Rica over Punta Cana.
