San Francisco Trip Suggestions

What neighborhoods are good to stay in? We are looking to possibly rent a studio or an apartment. There are so many to choose from, and not knowing the area-I'm not sure which areas of the city are the best. Best interms of safety, variety of restarants, bars, culture.

Are there any must sees? or places to visit?

Re: San Francisco Trip Suggestions

  • We're lucky, when we travel to SF we stay at our friends house, just off Polk street.  I really enjoy that, so if you have the opportunity, renting an apartment would be cool if you plan on staying there the entire time.  Though I would also suggest traveling a little too.  We did both sonoma and Carmel during our last trip.  Sorry, no specific recs off the top of my head.  You can't really go wrong!

  • We LOVED San Francisco.  I recommend staying downtown if you can. Loved Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz, Muir Woods, and China Town.
  • I love SF! We like staying in either the Fisherman's Wharf or Union Square area.

    Here's my to do/see list:

Walk or bike across the Golden Gate. Ride a cable car. Walk along the Embarcadero and go to the Ferry Building Marketplace (has lots of little shops and cafes/eateries). Go to Golden Gate Park, check out the Japanese Tea Garden and the Strybing Arboretum (botanical garden). Walk around Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39, go see the famous sea lions on the docks there. Go shopping at Union Square. Visit Ghiradelli ice cream & chocolate shop, yum!  And of course, a tour of Alcatraz is a must but make sure you book in advance though, like 2 - 3 weeks, especially for the night tour.

    Have fun!

  • We live in San Francisco (and I was born and raised in SF too). I'm happy to give you some tips. There are so many neighborhoods and they are all very different--really depends on what you want.

If you're looking for safest, cleanest, and most options in terms of restaurants, shops, bars, etc. I recommend the Marina/Cow Hollow area. Lots of young couples, singles. Streets are clean. Tons of restaurants and shops to choose from! Great to stay in an apartment in the area. Polk Street/Russian Hill has a lot going on also.

If you stay downtown, the Financial District can be rather dead on weekends. But during the week, it's very corporate and uber busy with men and women in suits running to lunch and meetings, etc. you can walk to Chinatown or take a cable car. Union Square area has lots of shopping--that's by the large Macy's. Shops like Tiffany's and hotels like Westin St. Francis and Sir Francis Drake are there. If you go to the Sir Francis Drake hotel stop in and go to the Starlight Room! It's a bar/lounge on the top floor of the hotel and it's very retro. Kind of fun. You can have a drink after a day of shopping/touring/walking :)

Fisherman's Wharf is very touristy but rather safe. You can walk along and see the little shops, Pier 39, wax museum, and Ghirardelli Square.

If you like museums, check out the MOMA, DeYoung. Academy of Sciences is across from the DeYoung in GG Park, you could knock out both.

And if you can swing it, definitely try to take a small day trip or two. If you rent a car, you can drive the Golden Gate Bridge and hit the next town up north which is Sausalito. Or you can drive further and hit wine country!

Whatever you do, don't stay in the Tenderloin or even "Tender-Nob"! Not safe.

Happy to help more! Let me know what other questions you have!

  • I grew up in sf too. I agree with pp, but I wanted to add that bar hoping in the mission distric and shopping in the height ashburry are not to be missed.
