CP: Kids staying the night away from home

At what age did/will your LOs first stay the night away from you?  Whether it was a night at their grandparents or a slumber party situation, how old were they the first time they stayed away from home?[Poll]

Re: CP: Kids staying the night away from home

  • I said 6 mo - 1 yr but really he was ~ 5.5 months when my mom died and I had to leave for 2 weeks to handle stuff in SC without him and he stayed home with dad. That's when I quit nursing cold turkey.  Not long after that, I started travelling for work.  He was probably 1-2 when we left him with someone else overnight.

Now I'll let him stay with just about anyone. Wink He comes with his own bedwetting alarm and everything.

  • I would feel comfortable with any potential children staying overnight with grandparents or certain relatives starting at six months. However, we don't travel much so it would probably be more for the benefit of the sitter, and not the child ;)

  • JJ was about six months old when I had my first overnight trip and H had to be gone for work. It was a long time until JJ had to stay with a relative overnight again because both H and I were tied up with something else, but I was comfortable with him being with my mom at that point.

EDIT: I will note that JJ has only stayed overnight with my parents, and it's happened fairly often [probably once or twice every other month]. With me being by myself all the time, my mom will take him so I can get things done or work over the weekend, or JJ will spend time with my parents when my dad's home on R&R and I can't get time off. I imagine JJ will spend the first weekend after DS#2 is born with my mom, but the overnights will probably decrease after new baby.

  • G was 6 months old the first time he stayed overnight with MIL (he hasn't stayed with my mom yet because of her crazy work schedule).  He's stayed with her 2 other times since then, and is staying one night with her this weekend so we can celebrate our anniversary.

It came up in conversation yesterday that some friends of ours haven't spent the night away from their kids yet.  They have a 4 1/2 year old and an almost 2 year old.  My mind was blown.

  • Conner was 18 months when he stayed a weekend at my parents, and he has only slept over there about 5 times since (one being when I had Carson). Carson has never stayed over anywhere.

  • V was 20 months old the first time he stayed at my parents, M was 16 months old and G has never stayed without me (though I tried to convince my parents to keep her this weekend).  My kids have never stayed with anyone but me or my parents though.

  • Both of my kids were under 6 months. As soon as my mom or MIL were willing to keep them, I was all about it! However overnight visits happened a lot more when it was just #1. #2 has only stayed the night at mom's or MIL's once... maybe twice. Hopefully it will happen again now that C is STTN well.
