Lesser known costs?

My husband and I are finally buying a house, and I'm trying to budget. I know once we move in, we'll need to buy appliances (washer, dryer, oven, fridge, dishwasher), a lawnmower, paint, tools... but I'm just wondering if there are other things we'll need that I haven't planned on. When you first moved into a new house, what things did you have to buy? Thanks!

Re: Lesser known costs?

  • weed wacker

hedge trimmer (if you have hedges/bushes)

garden hose (don't buy the cheap ones. they leak in 2 uses. )

    outdoor trashcan

changing the locks (not really a "thing", but it's a high priority security issue for us)

  • A few from my list:

    Window treatments

Toilet seats Change locks Lawn mower Weed wacker Swing set Trash barrels Outdoor seating/Patio set Shed

  • A grill. Cleaning supplies for a larger property. Lawn care items like a rake, shovel, weeding tools (spade, etc.), sprinklers, a dog chain or fencing (if applicable). Door mats. Flower pots.

  • Curtains and hardware for it.

A grill to go with the patio furniture.

    A ladder.

A decent sized house repair fund.  We bought a house that was basically move-in ready, but within a month of moving in the kitchen sink/faucet leaked and then broke, and we dealt with Hurricane Irene and the clean-up that went along with it - our gorgeously landscaped yard was destroyed and we are still dealing with it, as we lost all of our topsoil, mulch, much of our lawn, and some of our trees were damaged.

Funds to make minor cosmetic updates - replacing all of the knobs in a kitchen can be costly!

  • Thanks everyone! I have a lot of new things to add to my "to buy" list for when we move in, which was much needed!
  • For us, there was a trip to Target to get new bathroom supplies, multiple trips to Home Depot to get new toilet seats and various tools, and trips to West Elm for furniture (when you upgrade from 700sq ft to 3500, you need A LOT). We also did extensive renovations, but some "minor" things included painting and refinishing the hardwoods. I also plan to change the locks once the construction wraps up.

  • Lights, none of the bedrooms in our home have overhead lighting and we didn't have enough floor lamps to have a light in every room initially.

Plan on replacing the smoke etc detectors too.
