Hi all! Yesterday I brought our 4 1/2 month old Catahoula/Lab puppy, Pepper, to the new dog park near us yesterday. When we first got to the park she was having a ball! Playing with the other dogs & truly loving life. Everyone let around the same time leaving Pepper & I relaxing in some shade. Within a couple minutes 3 people brought in a larger dog on a leash & choke collar. They were in the small dog area while all the other dogs were there (a few goldens and labs). They owners took the collar and leash off their dog & within a few minutes their dog bit Pepper.
They immediately took their dog out & apologized. The one guy kept saying "See this is what happens" to someone else in the group. If "this is what happens" why did you bring your 70+ lb dog over to my 25 lb PUPPY!!! I was so pissed!!!
I did not see the bit happen, and I massaged her all over last night & didn't find any abrasions on her anywhere. Pepper was just really freaked out when it happened. We stayed at the park a little longer until she started to relax with more mellow dogs that came in. I brought her back again today, but there were a lot of male dogs & a very vocal yorkie, and she did not relax at all unless she was with people.
Does anyone have any advice? I don't want her to be scared of other dogs, which is why we've been trying to socialize her as much as possible. We'll see how she does at puppy school with week with the 2 other dogs there. And we may try the other dog park in our area. Thank you so much in advance.
Re: puppy got nipped at the dog park :-(
(and when too many dogs get into the mix, that's when me and Elvis go home.:) )
I'm glad this was resolved peacefully.
I would look for places that have separate places for different types of dogs.
The one near us has both a place for older/shy dogs and a younger dog area in addition to a large all dog area.
These things happen when you are mixing with a bunch of dogs. Pepper should be fine when she goes back. I would try not to be to freaked out or anxious when you go to another dog park. If the place gets to crowded I would leash her up and head out.
My dog has been trampled and bit before at the dog park, but he still enjoys going. People with aggressive dogs probably shouldn't go to these places, but they still do. If something happens in the future just pat and reassure her (if she is not bleeding etc).
Sorry this happened!
Sorry this happened! I stay AWAY from the dog parks in my area.
It is a RISK you take when going. Not sure what the rules are in your city/county/state park, but mine are basically "enter at your own risk."
It sucks that owners with aggressive dogs bring them to parks. Socializing a dog (esp a new dog) for the first time(s) at a park should ot be allowed. I wish there were more strict rules aross the board. We don't even have attendants at our local parks.
