Do I include this on my resume?
I have a full time job in accounting, but there is recently an opening for a promotion (still accounting). I haven't worked on my resume since I got this job 5 years ago and it needs help.
My question is, I've been running my own photography business for about a year now. Is this something to include on my resume? Or do I leave it off and focus on my current position?

If your photography business directly correlates to the accounting position, then sure. For example, if you need to file certain tax forms because of being a small business owner and that would reflect favorably upon you for the promotion, that would be something to include.
Be aware that some potential employers would see a side business as a competitor for your time.

I original thought was to include it so long as your resume isn't super long already because this is something interesting about you.
However, I think some of the other PP's were right that you shouldn't include it because it may look like your time will be split elsewhere and you may not commit as much energy into the accounting.
I work in HR currently, and I can definitely say you should not include it unless it is to fill gaps in your employment history (which it sounds like you won't need to do if you've been at this job for the past 5 years). Or unless it has major relevance to your accounting position that you have or are applying for... but judging from your question I'm guessing that isn't the case either.
Especially for companies hiring from within, they care more about what you have done at that company and for that company than anything else. Having been there for 5 years, I'd focus more on what you've accomplished during that time and add on any accounting bits from previous jobs as well.
It's not uncommon to have multiple resumes with different themes. This would be your "accounting" resume. (:
