Concerned that I gave my dog too much benadryl

I found a chart online, benadrylfordogs.net that put the range for a 70 lb dog between 70 mg and 140 mg. I just gave her 125 mg for allergies. She's been itching & licking a lot, and we ran out of Atopica, so I gave her benadryl hoping it would help.

When I read the dosing instructions for humans though, it's much lower, and suddenly I'm concerned. Did I just potentially give her too much? And if so, what should I do, or what symptoms should I watch for?

  • I would call the vet emergency line or whatever local pet poison control in your area to ask them.

  • you are just fine.  That is more than most vets will typically recommend at one dosing, but it is not a toxic level.

Dogs that size can typically have 3 adult benadryl up to 3 times a day. The dog dose is way higher than the human dose and it doesn't have the same effects on them as it does us. I know a tech that once gave her dog 8 adult benadryl and she was just fine so don't worry.

  • you should be fine.  We have benadryl prescribed from our vet and give our 60 pound dog 150 mg if he's having an allergic outbreak, and give up to 200 if he has hives.  Keep an eye on your dog if he hasn't had Benadryl before, but they can handle a pretty high dose.

I used to work for a vet and the rule of thumb is 1mg per pound every 6 hours at the most frequent. Unless, of course, your vet prescribes more. However, the level you gave should not be toxic. But like humans, it affects different dogs in many different ways. Some dogs cannot tolerate it. Just keep a careful watch for any odd behavior.

My vet said 1 to 2 mg per pound, so 125 is within the range.
