Interesting c&p: potentially racist commercial

Sorry for lack of clickiness. If anyone finds the ads, can you link them?

http://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/65726750/ShowThread.aspx#65726750

This is sort of off topic for the board, but as the mother of a biracial daughter, it does fit in with parenting for me.?

I'm really upset about Kraft's Milkbites campaign that shows a "mixed" (half granola, half milk) MilkBite named Mel lamenting his existence. In one commercial he asks his parents (a bowl of granola and a glass of milk) why they even bothered to have him. In another he is on a blind date and tries to "pass" as milk (white). When the date (a white woman) asks him why he "looks granola" he gets up and leaves. The whole series of commercials is based on the fact that Mel can't find his identity because of his mixed background, a perpetuation of the "tragic mulatto" myth that has been used to argue against interracial marriage ("But what about the children?").?

I can't believe that Kraft has stooped to this level of racial stereotype to promote a snack bar! I started a Change.org petition asking Kraft to rethink this campaign. Surely--in 2012--we can show a multiracial character without suggesting that's a flaw!?

If you agree, I'd really appreciate you signing and passing it on.? http://www.change.org/petitions/tell-kraft-to-stop-using-stereotypes-about-multiracial-people?

Also, I don't get why this would make me want to buy the snack. A MilkBites are the best of two breakfast choices - look both in one! angle would have worked better, with a side of a bowl of granola and milk is not portable and I can eat this bar on the bus.

and I don't really like food personified; it's creepy - even the M&Ms

  • Graham, are you referring to the video diaries? I saw several of those but only 2 commercials when i searched. The video diaries are actually really funny IMO, but I see what OP is saying about the commercials themselves. I wish they had been made more like the diaries to prevent these feelings.

  • Yeah, this sounds awful.....and dumb.

I think there were 3 commercials and the diaries.

Blind Date, Book Club, and Parents - blind date and parents are the ones referred to in the Bump post, book club is not great either.

  • I think the OP absolutely has a point.

Also, I think the people making dismissive comments are pathetically naive if they think the media doesn't use subversive imagery/ideology to sell.

  • regarding the "date" commerical, i thought the reference to the profile pic being milk was a play on what people occasionally do when they create profiles on dating websites.  like when the pic looks nothing like the actual person.  since the food product is part milk and part granola, it's funny that it would say it's milk since it looks nothing like milk.  it's like when people state in their profile that they're 30, but they're actually (and objectively) 50.

regarding the "parents" commerical, i thought the "confusion" was more about the reaction consumers may have to the food product..."what is this?  milk?  granola?  i don't get it."

i watched a documentary about the creation of home depot.  the owners said when home depot first opened, consumers didn't understand the concept and didn't know what to do with the company because consumers were used to going to separate stores for their separate home improvement needs.

i thought about the home depot story when i saw the "parents" commercial.

i'm not dismissing the OP, i'm just sharing my initial reaction to the commercials.

I interpreted the dating commercial like this when I saw it. I haven't seen the others.

Who has made a dismissive comment? So far everyone has seen what OP is referring to regarding the commercials.

I think Fernane might be referring to the posters in this thread.  I haven't read the other thread....is that where you're seeing dismissive posters?

  • Oh I didn't see another thread, sorry.

  • The commercials are really odd/awkward. I don't get how they even make you to want the product. There are a bunch of ways to make light of a certain situation and be TIC but those are not it. Tongue Tied

Ditto. Ya'll know I'm as Black Power as they come and I simply didn't go to ...

     That's racist
