MT Rushmore/Glacier National Park/ and I see Yellowstone below
Summer road trip will include lots to driving! Visiting them in that order. Looking for any tips and advice regarding:
The parks themselves- any must not miss sights etc
Any unique stops along the way between them?
Lodging- Inside versus outside the parks
Restaurants
any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
TIA
Re: MT Rushmore/Glacier National Park/ and I see Yellowstone below
I love Glacier! It's so beautiful. I stayed outside the park and then spent a day on the Going-to-the-Sun Road. There are lots of short hikes you can stop and do along the way and lots of wildlife to be seen - so give yourself a lot of time to do that drive.
Yellowstone is great too. I stayed in the north entrance of the park one night and then drove through the park and stayed in Jackson Hole. It's nice to stay there if you prefer to stay in a town and there are lots of hotel/motel/cabin options.
I went to Yellowstone in October and the traffic got bad at times when people stopped to look at wildlife - so I imagine it's crazy in the summer. So give yourself lots of time and start your drives early in the morning if you can.
I noticed it says you are from Indiana-my family took this trip (minus Glacier) last summer from Northern Indiana. I agree with the previous poster that you should definitely add the Badlands for a detour-it shouldn't be too far out of the way.
As for lodging, we stayed in KOAs most of the time and had a great experience. Granted, we have a son so we were looking for something more family friendly. In Yellowstone, we stayed in some of the cheaper cabins (near the Yellowstone Hotel), but you may have trouble booking anything within the park at this point in the year.
We really enjoyed Cody, WY as a stopping point between Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone. Cute town with lots of shops and museums downtown. Also, it was a nice change in the weather from South Dakota to Wyoming (much cooler).
Definitely go for the trails! Only once did we see anyone else on the trails in Yellowstone, and the views you get to see are worth the hike.
If you're interested, I blogged about our entire trip-not exactly a travel blog, but gives you an idea of activities and such. http://jmbowyer.blogspot.com/2011/07/on-road.html This is the first post with about 10 that follow. Hope this helps!
Thanks ladies:) Lots of good info! We are finding out the difficulty of booking in or near the part at that time of year:(
