Ribbons + cat = surgery :(

I wanted to share my story with everyone about the emergency surgery my cat had on monday night. Our cat Lucky started vomiting a clear substance on sunday. I called my vet and their answering service referred me to the Emergency Vet Clinic in York. Not knowing exactly what was happening, the vet suggested bloodwork and x-rays.

The x-rays showed that he had some type of object in his system. He suggested that he give Lucky a anti-vomiting medication and some subq. liquids. He then said to call our normal vet and get him a follow up appointment. I called Monday morning for the appointment. Before we took him to the office for the appointment he started vomiting a green substance.

At the appointment, the vet reviewed the records from the visit to the Emergency Vet Clinc. When looking at the x-rays, the object looked like a bread twistie tie. They took him and said they would be doing surgery right away to remove the object. We went home and waited for the phone call.

The vet called and said "We found the object, but it was not what I expected to see. I just removed 33 inches of ribbon from his stomach and intestinal tract."  She said that we would have lost him, if the surgery was not done that night.

Please be aware of what your pets may get into around the house.

  • Oh my goodness!  Poor Lucky!  I am so glad they found what it was and decided to do that surgery.  I wish him the speediest of recoveries.

  • I hope he has a speedy recovery. I am glad that they caught it in time.

  • I'm glad that you took him to the vet instead of waiting it out. It is always a tough call, but better to be on the safe side!

I always worry about our cat Neko. He is the very curious type who is notorious for getting into things that I think I have packed away. The other night I heared him in the middle of the night and got up...he had dragged some of my Christmas shopping bags from the bookshelf in our guest bedroom and was playing with stuff!

I would hate for curiousity to really kill the cat!

  • Thanks everyone for the well wishes for Lucky! He is doing well and is always with me resting.
