So the senior class voted and asked me to be their teacher to speak at graduation this year. I am honored but so unmotivated right now to get on this. I'm going to really start working on it on Wednesday (graduation is June 5).
Any ideas, suggestions, things you remembered about your own graduation or anything? I'm only speaking for a few minutes but thought I'd comment on them as a class (b/c they are seriously awesome) as well as a few pearls of wisdom/advice for the future. Thoughts?
Re: Speech Help
I remember Baccalaureate speaker more than the graduation speaker. That was (coming from a Christian school) about a passage of Scripture in Joshua 4... the point was that the Isrealites set up memorial stones so that in the future they would remember what God had accomplished at that event. Like a memorial... The speaker reminded us to set up "memorials" even just mental ones of places God has led us and how we change. I'm guessing though the Biblical reference won't be allowed...
For Graduation, I can tell you the speaker's name, but that's it. No idea what he said. However, I gave an awesome speech
lol... I was valedictorian and talked about what I saw through my eyes as I looked out at the pairs of eyes in my class. I referenced that things that we had seen through our learning and the things we would see in the future. It was a good theme for what it was.
I can't tell you a thing about the speeches at either of my college graduations, much less any other graduation I've been too. I think my advice would be to pick an object or event to reference... something that will stick in their minds and build around that. A strong theme will carry and go far, versus the typical "goals and future achievement" speech.
Congrats and good luck!
I agree with Brit, pick a theme or event to build from rather than doing something general just about goals and the future. They picked you because they relate to you on some level, so try and figure out where that connection is and go from there. More than anything, just speak from your heart and be a bit candid.
My HS graduation speaker gave 3/4 of his speech in Korean and Steve's college graduation speaker talked about the war in Iraq. So I have no real frame of reference for what a good commencement speech sounds like.
Good luck and I am sure it will be a great speech!

This is a great idea! I agree, I think picking a theme and sticking to it is a great strategy. One thing that's worked for me in the past is picking a song that you love/speaks to the theme, and use that to structure your speech. Pull out lyrics/lines that exemplify your message, and then back it up with examples/specifics about the class. Good luck!
One of the speakers at my graduation (not sure if it was the guest or valedictorian) said "Life isn't always about the front page, it is about the comics too". Totally stuck with me. The speech was about enjoying life and having fun even though we were going to be adults with more responsibilities etc.
Good luck. I hope you will let us see what you end up with. I am sure it will be fantastic
