When did you start packing?

We found out Thursday that our offer on a short sale was accepted by the bank after less than a month!  We have 45 days to close from offer acceptance and right now our close date is set for June 29th.  The house we are moving out of is just under 3000 sq ft so needless to say we will have a lot of packing to do.  I'm anxious to get started but I'm also terrified that something will go wrong in underwriting (we are going to rent out our current home so we will have two mortgages, this makes me nervous as far as getting the new loan approved although our loan officer seems unconcerned).  So when did you feel comfortable enough to actually start packing?

Re: When did you start packing?

  • We didn't start packing till after we closed, but we weren't in a rush; we've spent the past month gutting our kitchen. Even painting took about two weeks so we had plenty of time.

If we had bought move-right-in new construction, I would have started packing once we learned we had cleared all conditions with the underwriter -- about two weeks prior to closing.

  • I've been wondering the same thing!  We're set to close on June 25th.  Last time we moved we weren't prepared and spent the every moment we weren't at work the week before moving packing and cleaning out the apartment and it was horrible.  Today & tomorrow we're going to start cleaning out closets and the basement, both spots where "stuff" and junk has accumulated.  I figured this way we'll get a good chunk of any trash and goodwill donations taken care.

If you're looking for moving boxes, I found that Lowes has them much much cheaper than any uhaul or moving place.  Good luck!!

  • I would start collecting boxes and pack up what I wouldn't use for awhile (winter stuff) now and then wait until you're sure all is well from the bank to pack up the day to day stuff. We went to the liquor store every Monday for a month so we could get decent boxes with handles for free.

  • It's true that you don't know what can happen in the process, but it's a good idea to be prepared. As soon as the sellers accepted our offer, I started packing away things we didn't use like dishes, out-of-season clothes, media equipment. Get as much as you can out of the way. We found ourselves the day before closing packing things in boxes and still packing as we were moving.
