Locks?

To piggy back on the "Lesser known Costs" post...

One of the posters commented on changing locks. Thanks for that BTW. You jogged my memory as a must-do for our move-in at the end of the month. Big Smile

Anyway, do you hire a locksmith or do you just go buy new door hardware? How does the process work?

Thanks.

Re: Locks?

  • We hired a locksmith - each of our doors had a different key!  They just re-keyed everything for us.  We closed at 4pm on a Tuesday, they were there by 9am Wednesday.

RIP Dr. Irving Fishman - 10/1/19-7/25/10 - thank you for holding on for me.
You made my wedding day complete.

  • We lucked out, the realty company that owned our home had already switched the locks from the pervious owner to the Smartkey locks. So we just had to buy the re-key kit and were able to get all the locks switched and to the same key.

  • We had a locksmith scheduled to come out the day after we got possession but after closer examination of the locks decided to just buy all new locks/deadbolts/door handles.  We spent about $400 at Lowe's for three doors.
  • We replaced all the hardware on the doors ourselves. It wasn't that hard and cost less than $75 for 3 doors and 2 dead bolts.
