Anyone's pet on tramadol?

I'm going to ask the vet about putting my 10 y.o. lab on tramadol for arthritis pain. She's definitely stiff in the hind quarters and hesitates more about jumping onto our bed or into the car, although she can still do it.

Anyone's pet on tramadol? Has it helped? Any side effects?

I would ask for something more along the lines of Previcox (NSAID) which helps with arthritic pain more than tramadol does and is only give once daily.

  • My dog was on tramadol for years for arthritis. It's definitely worth asking about. I was never personally comfortable using NSAIDS so it was a good alternative for us.  I also supplemented with a joint pill that included glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM. She also got salmon oil and duralactin. I was pretty committed to keeping her as mobile as possible as naturally as possible. She started showing signs of arthritis around 8 or 9 years old, and we managed to keep her mobile until she was almost 15 years old when we sadly had to put her down. (The last 6 months she went really down hill.)
  • I wanted to add that we didn't start on tramadol until she was legitimately having trouble standing up. For just generalized stiffness I used the joint supplements, salmon oil and duralactin and it really helped for quite some time.
