Yellowstone national park?

DH and I want to take a trip to Yellowstone and I don't know where to begin. Which side of the park is best to start with for a Yellowstone beginner? We don't care about bars or other people, we just want to be in nature and get some good hiking in. We also need a hotel- no camping for us. Thanks!

Re: Yellowstone national park?

  • DH and I stayed at the Old Faithful Lodge. It is right next to Old faithful. It was built in the 1800's. The rooms have sinks only. As is common in some parks, you have male and female community bathrooms with private shower stalls and your usual stalls for toilets.

Despite this, we loved it. It's amazingly beautiful and peaceful to sit in the lobby on a cozy bench and watch people.

  • We went to yellowstone for the first time last september.  We stayed in west yellowstone for three nights.   If i did it again, I'd stay there for two nights, and I'd stay up north in gardiner one night so that we could get up early and get out to lamar valley early and see wildlife.  it's a looong drive to lamar valley from west yellowstone if you want to be there at the crack of dawn!   But otherwise, I felt like west yellowstone was a great home base with lots of hotels/restaurants.  If I were you, I'd try to just map out which days you want to hit each part of the two loops.  We hit the south/southwest part day one.  We hit as much of the north loop as we could the second day, and then the east side/anything we missed the last day.
