Brainerd, MN?

We're heading next week to stay on Gull Lake.  Any suggestions on things to do in the area?  Checked the weather and looks like it might be too cold to swim in the lake? So looking for alternatives to help keep us busy if this is indeed the case.

Re: Brainerd, MN?

  • I was up there but at a family cabin of my aunts so we didn't do much in the area.  We spent most of our time on the lake and it's a very small town.  My aunt said there is really not much to do there - It's only about two hours(I think) from MLPS if you're interested in going there.
  • Head down to Mall of America!

  • my grandparents have lived on gull lake for over 30 years and I frequently visit them - my thoughts are that unless you have family there or are looking to get away from it all for a quiet, relaxing weekend, then you're probably going to be bored - right now anyways.  the main drag on 371 doesn't offer many dining options, but you can look into the resorts there for spas and nicer restaurants.  Zorbaz Pizza in Nisswa is really good, not sure how busy that place will be the next few weekends until the summer season is in full tilt, but it's a big hangout otherwise; you can get there by boat as well if you want to take a boat ride while checking out some of the amazing palaces that most of the folks up there now refer to as just their summer cabins.  there's a heck of a lot more money up there now, so the options today are exponentially greater than they were just 10 years ago.  Grandview Lodge is supposed to be absolutely amazing and I recommend checking them out.
  • and it will absolutely be too cold to swim in the lake, even with the warm winter we had.
  • sorry - last interjection from me.  just spent the weekend up there and was surprised by how warm the lake was for this time of year.  keep in mind this is a hardy north midwesterner giving the observation and everything is relative. :)  but we would have swam had we brought our suits.  it's only going to get warmer and quickly.
  • I'm very familier. Brainerd- or Nisswa, more specifically, is a lot of fun. Gull Lake is fabulous and yes, my son will be swimming in Gull this weekend (we're pretty tough..) It's warm in the shallower areas. Downtown Nisswa is quaint, shops, an A&W. Wednesdays they do Turtle Races which are extremely popular. Zorbaz is on Gull and a lot of fun (good bar food, drinks, music, beach volleyball). There's a new restaurant called Sherwood Forest Tavern that is on the Gull Lake Chain that is a must-see. There's Adventure MiniGolf off the highway leading up to Nisswa. Tons of golf courses ranging in prices from very cheap ($9 for 9 holes at WildWedge in Pequot) to $$ (arnold palmer designed courses and the like). Depending on the resort you're staying at, there will likely be activities going on. We always stay at Grand View Lodge- it's our favorite and always has tons of planned activities. Maddens and Craguns are the other big resorts that have a lot to offer. Breezy Point Resort north of Nisswa is also nice.

Brainerd is a typical town of 13K+, nothing super noteworthy.
