Not very impressed with Frontline

It's been a few weeks since we dosed Callie and Gus with Frontline, and while it's definitely better, Gus in particular still has fleas that I can comb out of his coat.  We've cleaned and vacuumed the house thoroughly multiple times, I've washed everything that is washable (including slipcovers on couches and curtains), we've treated everything that I think we can treat, we have hardwood floors with only one small rug, and this is very frustrating.

Do I need to give it more time?  I know it needs to be re-applied every 30 days, but I'm wondering if we should switch to a different kind of flea med like K9 Advantix.  I haven't had to use either before, so I would really appreciate suggestions or advice!

  • I don't know how much advice I can give, but we're in the same boat with ticks.  I keep finding them.  I'm not sure where you are purchasing it, but my vet mentioned that some clients that purchased it online were having the same issues.  I'm thinking of going to Advantix next dose.

An animal needs to be treated for at least 3 months for the Frontline to be effective. It doesn't kill all the life stages of the flea so in order to completely eliminate them you need to treat multiple times and the situation will get worse before it gets better. It sucks to hear but it takes work to get rid of them in your house. Are you treating your yard as well? People often skip this step and can't figure out why they can't get rid of the fleas.

If you apply the frontline to your animal monthly, you may still see ticks on them because it has to bite the animal before it dies so ticks can still be on them but they cannot attach themselves. They are nasty, nasty, nasty little buggers that carry numerous nasty diseases so protecting your animal against them monthly is really, really important!

  • I use Advantix and apply every thirty days even in the winter.  Both of my dogs still get ticks, we live in front of the woods.  I have tried a couple products but nothing seems to work for me either.

  • We use Advantix on our dog, and we've been really happy with it. I've found three ticks on him in the year we've used it. One managed to bite him, all died hungry. Advantix is supposed to kill on contact, and in our experience, it does.

I've heard many people have issues with Frontline and it wouldn't be a brand I'd go to, tbh.

  • I have heard that in certain parts of the country (FL, in particular) Frontline is not working as well for fleas.

We use Frontline, but we have never really had any flea issues. If I was in the south I'd probably use something different for flea control.

  • Frontline didn't work at all for us last year, dog got infested with fleas. We went to the vet and got the monthly pill and it works great, but it doesn't work for ticks.

i've found one tick on the dog and one tick on the bed in the last week or so, so we really need to find something that works for them. But I don't think you can give a topical and the pill at the same time, but I'm not sure.

  • We used Frontline for years and never saw a flea until this year.  We switched to Advantage I think it was stunk just as bad.  Apparently the fleas in Florida are resistant to it.  I'm sure that's happening elsewhere.

We switched to Comfortis (a chewable) and they suckers were dying immediately and were gone within an hour!  It has worked great for the past few months.

  • I live in Florida and we had a VERY warm winter, and fleas are out like crazy!

You HAVE to treat your yard.

Keep up with vaccuming and mopping/getting rid of dust (fur) bunnies.

Wash linens, bathmats, towels on a regualar basis.

A PP was correct: Frontline works, but you have to treat continually.....not just once and all the flea eggs/ticks die. You have to treat every 30-40 days each month.

It's annoying, but keeping up with cleaning (even doing extra) helps. Vaccum, vaccum, vaccum.

  • Flea meds only work on live fleas so it doesn't kill the egg stage. One thing that really helps is to shave your pet. It sounds weird especially if you have a longer coated animal, but shaving gets rid of lots of eggs higher up on  the hair shaft. Of course, you don't have to do that, it is just a suggestion that may work for you.

Flea meds on the market are actually not working across the country. Fleas/ticks are becoming resistant to them. We use Advantage Multi for one of our dogs. It is a chewable form, but does not kill against ticks (only fleas and heartworm). You can give a separate tick med in combination with Multi. For our other dog, we use the Pro Heart injection and that works great for her.
