Hi all,
We moved into our house in february. the home inspector didn't find any mold, however there was some evidence that there had been water in the basement at some point.
On move in day my dad and I were looking at the furnace more closely and discovered that it has a humidifier attached to it (to which my father said "My parents used to have one of these, they're fantastic, it should be turned on") and my dad turned it on. about 3 hours later we discovered the humidifier was not shutting the water supply off (result=1+ inch of water in the basement). we got the wet vac and cleaned-up, discovered the shut-off for the water supply had been turned off by the previous owners because they weren't using the humidifier.
anyways 3 months later I've noticed mold growing about 10" up on the sheet-rock that got wet. we're planning to cut off the sheet-rock right above the waterline and replace it with new...should we cut higher?
Re: mold in the basement
You'll need to cut it up as far as you still find mold. There's probably mold higher up on the back of the drywall than you would think.
