Northeast Vacations

Any suggestions for a family vacation in the Northeast? We were thinking somewhere in New Jerey since that is only about a 4 hour drive but I'm open to other suggestions too. I'm driving myself nuts researching online. We only want to do 3 or 4 days which is making it difficult since most rentals require a weeklong stay. I'm cool with staying at a hotel but we'd prefer one that has a bedroom and living area, since Kyke goes to bed around 8 and we don't want to sit in the dark and quite after he goes to sleep.Anyone want to be my personal travel agent?

Some places we've discussed are Ocean City, long Beach Island and Rehoboth beach. I just really don't know much about any of those places so any input or other suggestions is appreciated.  Oh yeah... And affordable is KEY!!!

Re: Northeast Vacations

  • My personal favorite is York ME. I know that is probably a drive for you. It is only 1 hour north of Boston. The beach is delightful. There are a lot more place sin NH/ME but they are 3+ hours away from Boston, so even further from you.

  • Maybe Wildwood?

There's a lot of great family-friendly stuff there... I think it's more family-oriented/less party-ish than some of the other shore points, and there are more motels there where a lot of the shore points mostly have rental houses.

  • Do you definitely want to be by the beach? If not, Vermont might be a great option for you, and not that long of a drive.

  • I thought about Wildwood, but that was always my families vacation spot growing up and I kind of wanted to try something else. Although, if you think it the most family friendly place in Jersy it might be worth considering.

  • If you want NJ, Cape May is also nice (near Wildwood). Point Pleasant Beach is also nice-that's where we like to take Katie. We are actually going to Key West in July (not northeast though). My SIL lives in Maine and its beautiful up there too. If you end up in Jersey, let me know! :)

  • My favorite place to travel in the Northeast is Krissy's parents' house. The food and company are out of this world.

If you are stuck on NJ, I had a great time in Point Pleasant Beach when I was in college and went with some friends.

  • I wouldn't say I'm stuck on NJ... It's just the first beach area that comes to mind that is somewhat close. We did Cape Cod a few summers ago and we just didn't really love it and i just don't really know of other areas/states to even begin looking at. Plus im a big fan of parking the car when arriving and having everything in walking distance... Beach, food, boardwalk.. Which again, is why I think NJ.  Thanks for the suggestions!

Kate, have you ever stayed at that place before? It's definately in the price range I was hoping for.

It was the first place that popped into my head when you said you wanted a separate bedroom. I haven't stayed there in a really long time... but it looks like it had good reviews on trip advisor recently, which I think counts for a bit - http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g46932-d577400-Reviews-Compass_Family_Resort_Motel-Wildwood_Crest_New_Jersey.html

  • LBI was always my family's vacation spot growing up.  I love LBI and it is family friendly, but there is no boardwalk, so there is limited evening activities.  As a parent, I love Ocean City.  It is awesome for families and it has a boardwalk with little rides.  I grew up going to the Jersey Shore, so if you have any questions, let me know.

Between Ocean City and Wildwood which would you think is best with an 18 month old? I havent been to Wildwood since I was 10 or so, so its hard to remember. DH is telling me I'm over thinking it... Which is probably true!!

Wildwood is much nicer now than it was than when we were kids.  It is much more family friendly.  Regardless, I personally like Ocean City better because it is more quaint, but Wildwood has more going on (bigger boardwalk, more shops, bigger rides).  I also like Ocean city better because the walk from the boardwalk to the ocean is much shorter than the one in Wildwood.  When you are toting all your beach stuff plus a little one, you are not going to want to walk the length of the Wildwood beach.  So bottom line, I would choose Ocean City.

  • I went to LBI for my bachelorette party, it was great fun :)  Other than that, I second the nominations of Vermont and Maine, but those will be very long drives...

As for places to stay, check out http://www.airbnb.com/ as an alternative for rental homes.  Most places you can choose any number of nights (as long as that place has the space) and you can get anything from a bedroom in a house, to a whole place for yourself.  My cousin uses it to rent her bedroom out in NYC to travellers who want to stay in the city for cheap.  We are renting a whole house with pool in Australia for a week in October with my parents, and between the 4 of us it's actually cheaper than staying in a hotel.

We're currently on a 15 month trip around the world!
