pedicure inducing labor?

I was just talking to my friend who is almost 37 weeks pregnant now, and she said she is afraid to get a pedicure because it can cause contractions. I had never heard this before, have any of you? I have heard of many pregnant women getting pedicures, especially towards the end when you can no longer reach your feet :)

I mean I understand the massage/pressure points thing, but I guess I didn't realize a pedicure was "strong" enough to cause labor.

Re: pedicure inducing labor?

  • I have hearD that they avoid certain areas when women are pregnant. I have heard of this though. Didn't do the trick for me.

  • Ya, I have heard of certain massages during pedicures can cause labor. Don't know of anyone who it has worked on though.

I think that this is what it is.  There are pressure points in your ankles that can cause contractions.  However I don't think it would work to send you into labor unless you were ready anyways.

This. Also the "massage" they tend to give your feet during a pedicure isn't usually the same as the acupressure that would normally be needed to hit those pressure points, or at least this is what I've heard. FWIW, I've had a pedicure while pregnant, and I plan to get one a week from Saturday, my toes need to be done and my feet are way rough. I'm not worried about it sending me into labor.

  • I went for one at 39 weeks and nothing at all. then I went for one at 39 weeks 4 days, and Piper was born at 39 weeks 6 days. I didnt notice any contractions out of the ordinary either time. As a massage therapist I was aware of the pressure point spots but unless they are deliberately trying to induce labor, it likely wont do anything.
  • If they massage the pressure points around her ankles yes it can induce labor. They should know the area's to avoid though.. if she doesn't trust it she can make sure to mention it to the person doing her pedicure!
