Becoming an officer

I'm currently a teacher, but occasionally I toy around with the idea of joining the military. I have many relatives and friends in the military, and grew up in a military town. I know the general ins and outs of being enlisted, but don't know anything about the process of becoming an officer. A friend from college recently became a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force, and it got me thinking about it again. I guess I have a few questions, if anyone would be willing to answer them.

1. What career options are there in the military for someone currently in education? I looked at the careers on the AF website, but I know they probably fancy it all up to sound enticing (kind of worked).

2. What do you wish you had known before you joined? Any pros or cons you didn't realize at that time?

3. What else should I consider?

I do worry about being away from my family, but honestly I currently live away from family, and have for over 6 years. I'm mainly concerned with the idea of being away from my husband and son, and any other kids we may have in the future. Obviously it will happen at some point, but I'm talking about the possibility of being away for an extended period of time.

Thanks! :)

Re: Becoming an officer

  • I don't know all lot of the specific answers to your questions about education in mil- that might be something you need to talk to a recruiter about... I do know that it's very competitive to go officer right now because of a combo of things - a lot of qualified applicants, force shaping and.cut backs. There is a FAQ link in my siggy that may have some answers or at least some good info for you. Good luck!

  • Hi! I'm new here buuut I'm a newly commissioned 2LT in the USAR.  As far as career options, it's best to talk to a recruiter for whichever branch you're looking into.  The biggest con me and my FI have run into (mind you, we're both new) has been slow processing.  It took him 1 month to start getting paid then 4 add'l months to get paid the right amount.  He got a bunch of back pay, but from what I've heard this is a fairly common problem.  Might just be among the people we know, don't know if it's Army-wide, I don't want to make a crazy generalization here.  We're both very happy we joined.  Another thing you may want to consider is looking on usajobs.gov.  They include federal jobs, you can search by post (e.g. FT Bragg) and they will provide you a detailed listing.  There were at least 5 available teaching jobs on post here.

     Good luck!
