Do you have pet insurance?

If so, which one? How much does it cost?  What does it cover? Have you ever had a substantial claim (meaning, your dog needs knee surgery, etc)?  We have decided we need insurance for our two mutts. They way those two race around, it is any wonder one of them hasn't broken its leg.

Re: Do you have pet insurance?

  • We've looked into it before but found it wasn't worth it in the end. I believe the policy we looked at was close to $50/month for 80% reimbursement and a $200 deductible.  It just seems like a waste of money.
  • I did when I first got Maddux. He's registered so he had AKC insurance free for a certain time period, but once the trial period ran out the cost of the premium didn't seem worth it to me so I let it expire.

  • That's good to know...given our big our dogs are and how hard they play...I just wonder if it isn't worth it.  I am worried one of them is going to severely hurt their legs, they way they run around....
  • We looked into it when we got our big family dog because he was so accident prone as a puppy. But we also found that the deductible just wasn't worth it - better to pay out of pocket or work with the vet on the bill.

Granted, none of our dogs have ever had major surgery [hope that trend continues], so I'm not sure if in that instance, insurance would be worth it. But we have a 12-year-old and a 4-year-old, and neither would've used the insurance enough to justify it.
